Muhsin Ertugral reveals real problem at Kaizer Chiefs and blames 'influential' Bobby Motaung as Amakhosi's woes worsen

The former Orlando Pirates tactician has joined the discussion about what has gone wrong at Naturena.

  • Chiefs will finish this season without any silverware
  • They have now gone for nine years without winning trophies
  • Ertugral discusses what has gone wrong

WHAT HAPPENED?

Following Thursday's embarrassing 5-1 Premier Soccer League home defeat by Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs are licking their wounds.

This will be the ninth successive season for Amakhosi to miss out on any major piece of silverware.

Former Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral shares thoughts on what he thinks has been holding progress back at Naturena and apportions a fair share of the blame on the club's football manager Bobby Motaung.

WHAT ERTUGRAL SAID

Muhsin Ertugral of Orlando Pirates

"It’s a very long time for a club that had great achievements in the past," Ertugral told GOAL.

"The problem is not with the individual. There's something wrong with the whole system! If it’s by far too long for a team with such a successful history.

"First of all, the word 'performance' was completely neglected. Performance is the foundation of success in a functioning organisation.

"The team is truly devoid of everything," the Turkish tactician added.

"There is no rhythm, no aggression, no understanding of playing without the ball. There is a slow understanding of the tactical concept.

"Football is a concept game. Without a concept, targeted training and education cannot be successful," Ertugral continued.

"The future belongs to clubs that adopt an identity, philosophy and game model to make it the spine from top to bottom of their club. That has been neglected for years.

"We can only achieve great success over the years by becoming a homogeneous team," the 64-year-old went on.

"How is this possible for Chiefs after changing so many players and coaches in recent years, which was never the philosophy of Chiefs.

"Bobby is not involved in day-to-day business, which when you look into previous years, he was very influential. He thrived in a strong football culture and consistent decision-making in the past."

Ertugral's remarks are an echo of what Chiefs legends have also noted when discussing the problems bedevilling the Soweto giants.

While legendary left-back David Kannemeyer has bemoaned the frequent changing of coaches and the quality of players, saying some of them do not deserve to play for the Soweto giants.

WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

Given Msimango Red Card - Kaizer Chiefs

The Glamour Boys are left with four games before the season ends and are currently placed in position eight with slim chances of ending the season in the top four.

Meanwhile, they are searching for a new coach and it is to be seen if they will be able to get a tactical genius who will put together an effective playing system as well as quality players who deliver.
