Jude Bellingham has apologised to Real Madrid fans following their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League. The England international couldn't inspire Los Blancos to end the Reds' unbeaten start to the new-look tournament.

Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo were on target with two second-half goals to send Arne Slot's side two points clear at the top of the League Phase. There were missed penalties at both ends as Caoimhin Kelleher saved well to deny Kylian Mbappe while moments later Mohamed Salah fired his effort from 12 yards past the post.

The defeat marked the latest disappointment for Real Madrid following a difficult start to the campaign. Injuries hampered Carlo Ancelotti's selection for the trip to Anfield but the loss left Madrid two points clear of the elimination places as they occupy the final Round of 16 playoff spot.

Taking to Instagram on Friday, Bellingham wrote: "Always one step forward and two steps back at the moment, really disappointing performance result despite the brilliant opponent.

"Must thank and apologise to all Madridistas that followed us in England. No point dwelling on what we can no longer change, we have to remain together and push each other in this next important stretch of matches! Hala Madridd Siempre."

Following the defeat, the 21-year-old spoke to TNT Sports and admitted Slot's side wanted it more than the reigning Champions League holders. He admitted: "They were more up for it than us to be honest.

"It's a bad result against the best-performing team in Europe. It's no disgrace to come here and lose but we are disappointed in the way how we performed.

"From the first minute, they took control of the game. We never really maximised the spells we had in possession. When we got the ball back we tried to force a counter-attack a few too many times.

"We turned it over so much that they managed to keep control. Defensively they kept us in a place where we couldn't really harm them as much."
