Not everyone is happy with the business Arsenal did in the summer transfer window.
The Gunners had to work really hard this summer, not just to bring in the players Mikel Arteta wanted but to also move a few names out of the club.
Multiple players joined and left Arsenal in this window, and we really think it was a good summer on the whole. Edu Gaspar deserves praise for the job he has done.
However, David Seaman believes Arsenal have gotten weaker in one area of the pitch because Arteta allowed a key player to leave the club.
Aaron Ramsdale was Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper at this time in 2023.
The England international had a phenomenal 2022/23 season and even made it into the PFA Team of the Year. He was widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.
However, right after the September international break, Arteta dropped Ramsdale and picked David Raya, who had come in on loan last year.
That led to a ton of criticism, but in the end, Arteta was proven right. Raya deservedly became the number one, and that forced Ramsdale to look for a different club.
Arsenal sold Ramsdale to Southampton on deadline day in a deal that suited all parties. The Englishman will play regularly there, which is what he has wanted for months now.
Seaman, who knows a thing or two about goalkeeping, has now had his say on what happened. He has admitted that he was disappointed to see Arsenal sell Ramsdale.
He said on the Seaman Says podcast: “With the goalie situation, obviously, Aaron going to Southampton.
“I was disappointed, in a way, looking with my Arsenal head on, because if you can keep two quality goalkeepers like that happy, as much as I didn’t agree that Aaron is a number two – he’s way too good to be a number two – but for Arsenal, that’s a great situation.
“Now, he’s gone. In a way, I feel like the club have done Aaron a favour by letting him go and now resurrecting his England career, hopefully get back in the squad because he’s playing.
“But, at the end of it, when I look at it, Arsenal, in that situation, are a little bit weaker.”
Arsenal’s decision to sell Ramsdale was the best thing for all parties involved.
Forcing the Englishman to stay when it was clear that he wasn’t going to play many games would’ve made him unhappy, and that wouldn’t have been ideal at all.
Ramsdale is gone now and Arsenal have replaced him with Neto, who is a very good goalkeeper with a ton of experience under his belt.
The Brazilian is more than capable of stepping in if required, but Arsenal fans will be hoping for one thing after Ramsdale’s departure – that Raya stays fit throughout the season.
As long as that happens, Arsenal will not regret selling Ramsdale.
