Aston Villa had a very interesting summer transfer window.

Unai Emery’s side had to deal with Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR) and Financial Fair Play (FFP), which meant concluding some much-talked-about deals.

Douglas Luiz leaving Villa for Juventus was one of the main talking points, including who arrived from the other end.

Aston Villa ended up signing Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea from the Serie A giants, but after pre-season, they proceeded to loan them out to Bologna and Valencia, respectively.

Iling-Junior is having a quiet time with Bologna, but the same can’t be said for midfielder, Barrenechea.

The 23-year-old, who was playing in Italy’s second tier last season, might have been told by Aston Villa to get some much-needed starts under his belt because he wasn’t ready for them, has earned himself a maiden call to the Argentina squad.

Emi Martinez is one of the main men for Argentina and now Barrenechea will share the same field as him ahead of their international matches.

Villa must be purring at the prospect of Barrenchea being called up because it proves how well he is performing in the colours of Valencia.

Remember, these are the World Champions, as well as the 2x Copa America winners, so it’s not that easy earning a call.

But, as Argentina officially confirmed on Instagram, they have a new midfielder in town.

How Barrenechea has performed for Valencia

The defensive-minded midfielder has had to be patient for his minutes, but when he has played, he has performed and done himself justice.

Barrenechea did score his first goal against Getafe last month, but unfortunately, his team proceeded to concede a late equaliser.

Overall, WhoScored have rated his performance at 6.52, with his first start for the club, back in August, resulting in his team securing their first clean sheet of the season during their 2-0 win over Girona.

That was then backed up during the goalless draw against Osasuna, but then he was dropped to the bench and his side were comfortably outplayed by Real Sociedad.

Since then, he has earned back-to-back starts and is hoping his call-up to the Argentinian squad is a fruitful one, with World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru coming up.
