Liverpool fans say Jurgen Klopp 'deserves' axe as star finally thrives in No1 position vs Spurs

Jurgen Klopp has been blamed by some fans for not squeezing the most out of one Liverpool player sooner, with some fans in awe after setting up Mohamed Salah's breakthrough against Tottenham

Jurgen Klopp has been dubbed outdtedby some for not playing a certain Liverpool star in his preferred position sooner

Anfield will mourn the end of an era when Jurgen Klopp leaves Liverpool this summer - but not everyone will be that upset.

In fact, some fans have suggested the German may have lost his touch after neglecting to play one star in their preferred position. Darwin Nunez has taken roost as Liverpool's go-to central option in attack this season, while Gakpo has made do with his role as deputy No9 for much of the term.

However, it was from the left wing that the former PSV star and Eredivisie champion teed up Mohamed Salah for a simple-looking opener at home to Tottenham on Sunday. Gakpo, 24, cut off the flank and onto his favoured right foot before finding his Egyptian team-mate in plenty of space, which left some fans wondering why the former hasn't been used there more often.

One disgruntled supporter asked: "It’s this Gakpo Klopp has been benching Nunez for all season? Klopp deserves what he has gotten." Meanwhile, another sullen supporter posted: "Gakpo at left wing is all we needed but Klopp failed."

"If we had played Gakpo as regularly as we had played Darwin this season, he would have at least five goals more than Darwin has," chimed a third unhappy disciple. And a fourth added: "Gakpo was playing that pass every week for PSV, but hasn’t been able to for Liverpool because he’s never used on the left."

And any calls to promote Gakpo only grew stronger when he added to his assist with a goal early in the second half. Harvey Elliott's cross found the forward in the box, and he headed home his 15th goal of the campaign.

In Klopp's defence, Colombia's Luis Diaz was deserving of starter status on the left based on last season's form, though he hasn't been as productive this time around. That's left Gakpo to settle for 21 substitute appearances across all competitions, many of which involved him coming on in the middle, down the right, and even in central midfield.

Liverpool spent around £40million to recruit the Netherlands international from Eindhoven in January 2023, though he's yet to set the Premier League alight. And perhaps a big part of that is down to Klopp not giving the star consistent minutes in his best role.

The man who ended the Reds' 30-year wait for Premier League glory and brought European success to Merseyside will bring an end to his nine-year stay in England at the end of the season. However, Feyenoord boss and Dutchman Arne Slot - who has been tipped to take over at Anfield - could be the man to get the most out of compatriot Gakpo.
