Chelsea are reportedly set to rival Newcastle United for Fulham centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo

Chelsea have joined the race to sign Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo this summer, according to reports. 

Newcastle United are understood to be chasing the defender - out of contract in June. Defence is an issue for Eddie Howe, with Dan Burn the only first-team option available.

Emil Krafth played - and performed well - as a makeshift centre-back during the Magpies’ 4-1 win over Burnley at Turf Moor. Fabian Schar picked up a hamstring strain and could be back before the season finishes while ACL injuries have ruled Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles out until the end of the year.

That has propelled centre-back up the transfer wish list and Adarabioyo ticks a lot of boxes. At 26, he has plenty of time to improve and signing a Premier League-proven defender on a free would be considered shrewd business.

He also enjoyed Pep Guardiola’s tutelage as a youngster before forging his path elsewhere. Fulham boss Marco Silva appeared resigned to losing Adarabioyo ahead of their 0-0 draw with Brentford.

The defender is reportedly leaning towards a Toon switch but they may face competition from Chelsea. TeamTalk names Stamford Bridge as a potential destination, with Todd Boehly unlikely to bankroll another transfer splurge.

The Blues have carelessly spent over £1billion since Roman Abramovich’s exit two years ago and been treated to no European football in return. Liverpool are also linked with the defender, although their transfer plans are up in the air until Jurgen Klopp’s replacement - likely to be Arne Slot - is formally announced.
