Peter Schmeichel's reaction to Andre Onana mistake vs Galatasaray says it all

Peter Schmeichel struggled to hide his true feelings after Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana made a meal of Hakim Ziyech's equaliser.

It was an evening to forget for summer signing Onana, who has now conceded more goals than any other goalkeeper in the Champions League this season.

The Cameroon international was partly at fault for Galatasaray's opener inside the hostile Ali Sami Yen stadium, when he was wrong-footed by a tame free-kick from Ziyech.

And in the second-half, Onana fumbled another strike from the former Chelsea winger to make it 3-2 with just over an hour played.

Moments later, TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher spotted Peter Schmeichel's reaction to the incident.

“Peter Schmeichel just sat along from us has just put his head in his hands,” Fletcher said as several Galatasaray players sprinted towards the centre circle.

Robbie Savage, who joined Fletcher on commentary duties for Wednesday night's clash in Istanbul, criticised Onana's lacklustre reactions.

“The goalkeeper, I think it has bounced just in front of him and he’s tried to push it up but that’s terrible goalkeeping," he said. "Two errors for me. Is he anticipating a touch off his own player?”

Onana made two significant errors to gift Galatasaray a way back into the game, but Erik ten Hag refused to blame his goalkeeper.

"He is OK, but, as I say, it’s not about an individual," he said after the game.

"Of course, in football, some individual errors can make a difference and you have to take responsibility for it, but it’s always about the team and this team is good.

"All the players in this squad are good and deserve to play for Man United because they are brilliant players and that counts for the whole squad."

Instead, Ten Hag praised Ziyech's "brilliant" free-kick efforts. "You have to not so easily give free-kicks away and then defend the free-kicks better because it happened twice," the Dutch manager added.

"‘But, I have to say, that is Hakim. His brilliance, I know that. In such zones he is extraordinary. To give such free-kicks [to him] is very difficult to defend as well."
