Gary Lineker names Manchester United icon as 'most complete player ever'
Gary Lineker has named former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson as the most complete footballer ever.
Robson enjoyed a superb career at Old Trafford making 297 appearances for the club between 1981 and 1994. During this time, he scored 59 goals for the club and won a breadth of trophies for the Reds including; two Premier Leagues, an FA Cup and three League Cups.
However, in Lineker's eyes, the ex-midfielder could have won a lot more particularly on the international stage had he avoided injuries. Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, the legendary striker said: "I would actually go, if we can go all time, Bryan Robson [as the most complete player].
"I honestly think if Robbo had stayed fit because he broke down in both World Cups I played in, in ‘86 and ‘90, I think we would have had a really good chance of winning one of those, particularly Italia ‘90." Reminiscing about facing Robson in matches, Lineker recalled a time when he was playing for Leicester in the League Cup and he was tasked with marking the midfielder from corners at Old Trafford.
"The first corner of the game comes and it is about ten minutes in and Robbo is there so I run back and I stand next to him on the edge of the box," he continued. "Bryan Robson looks at me and he just gives me a look and goes: ‘What you doing?’ And I said: ‘Well I am marking you aren’t I,’ and he just laughed.
"The corner comes in and he doesn’t stand on the edge of the box does he, he charges in and I go back with him. He heads it, it hits the bar and bounces over and I am knocked and am lying on the edge of the six-yard box on the floor.
"15 minutes later there is another corner and it comes in, the ball and me end up in the back of the net and Bryan Robson had scored. I remember running back to the halfway line and he is just laughing at me.
"I get in at half time and I just go: ‘I told you, I told you,’ and Gordon [Milne, ex-Leicester City boss] has gone: ‘Just stay up [field].’"
