Arsenal prioritise double Premier League swoop as surprise £40m defender deal emerges

The football season may have entered the most important part, but that hasn't stopped the transfer rumour mill from starting to link players with a move to Arsenal.

With them still within a shout of winning the Premier League title, the Gunners are expected to enjoy another busy transfer window after splashing over £250m last year.

As Mikel Arteta's side have experienced once again, the margin at the top is minimal. Recent reports have indicated that a new forward and winger are at the top of Edu Gasper's wishlist, but other positions could be improved once the window slams open.

Here, football.london has rounded-up the latest stories in the transfer world with a fresh perspective on what it means to Arsenal.

Priority targets revealed

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise have emerged as two targets for the Gunners for the summer transfer window. According to The Guardian, Isak could cost around £100million in the summer, leaving the north Londoners scrambling for alternatives in Viktor Gyokeres.

Olise, who signed a four-year contract with Palace in August, has continued to attract interest despite making just nine appearances this season. A fee in the region of £65m has been touted with Chelsea and Manchester United interest.

football.london says: "Arsenal's interest in Isak is hardly 'new' or surprising considering their clear need for a striker. He's proved to be one of the most clinical strikers in the league.

"Newcastle's financial constraints mean they may be forced to lose their Swedish striker in the summer. His goalscoring record has been impressive this season and he's set to play a vital part to their hopes of returning to the Champions League next season.

"Arsenal would need to sell Eddie Nketiah if they were to bring Isak in. Reiss Nelson and Emile Smith Rowe are also two players who could likely be out the day and Olise is the perfect target for them."

£40m offer for defender

Arsenal are reportedly considering making an offer for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Willian Pacho. According to Florian Plettenberg, the Gunners are one of many clubs following the centre-back's progress.

The Bundesliga outlet reportedly wants around €50m (£43.1m)-€60m (£51.7m). The report, relayed by Bolvaip, claims that Arteta's side have met with the German club. It's said the first formal offer was around €45m (£38.8m).

Frankfurt are expected to remain tough in their negotiations, with Liverpool also making contact.

football.london says: "It's quite refreshing to see Arsenal looking to improve an area of Arteta's squad that isn't desperate for new signings. At centre-back, William Saliba and Gabriel have formed a strong partnership with Jakub Kiwior coming in when required.

"However, excessive minutes have been a problem this season and signing Pacho would give the Gunners the chance to rotate their defensive line when needed.

"Paying nearly £40million for a defender from the Bundesliga may be looked at in a negative sense by others but the 22-year-old Ecuador international would follow the blueprint implemented in the recruitment team at the Emirates."
