Erling Haaland batters Wolves to keep Man City on Arsenal's tails - 5 talking points

MAN CITY 5-1 WOLVES: Erling Haaland scored all four goals as City moved back to within a point of Arsenal following their win over Bournemouth earlier on Saturday

So that's one trophy in the bag, and at least one more will surely follow.

Erling Haaland will be a shoo-in for the Golden Boot after he took his Premier League haul to 25 goals for the season, five clear of Alexander Isak and Cole Palmer, by blasting four past a tired Wolves, as his strikes took Manchester City back to within a point of Arsenal, just where they were at start of Saturday.

After the Gunners had run out 3-0 winners over Bournemouth, City raced into a three-goal lead by half-time thanks to two Haaland penalties sandwiching a superb header.

Hwang Hee-chan pulled a goal back for Wolves early in the second half, but Haaland immediately smashed in his fourth before his late replacement Julian Alvarez rolled in a fifth for City. Here are game's main talking points.

1. And today's rules are...

Josko Gvardiol had got his shot off before being tripped by Rayan Ait-Nouri
Josko Gvardiol had got his shot off before being tripped by Rayan Ait-Nouri

We can go over and over it again if we want but surely no-one's got the energy for that.

Rayan Ait-Nouri's challenge on Josko Gvardiol came after the Manchester City player had got his shot off, and so in that sense it is no different than the Wolves No.3 turning and lamping the big Croatian in the face as the ball was being tossed back from the stands. That wouldn't be a penalty, but this was given as one.

There will be argument and counter-argument but the key thing is this; you just know that you will see a similar incident in the Premier League on Sunday or Monday or next weekend and a penalty won't be given. And someone will be around to tell you that was the right decision as well. It's a mess.

2. And while we're at it...

Craig Pawson was sent to the VAR screen before City's second penalty

Yeah, sorry, skipping ahead a bit. But after referee Craig Pawson was happy enough to give the first penalty then why on earth did he need to rely on VAR for the second?

The challenge from Semedo on Haaland was clear to see, but Pawson didn't deem it worthy of a spot-kick until he was told it was one by his mate in his ear. Why? Still thinking about the first one? Afraid of making a mistake?

Refereeing in context is something that seems to have crept in more and more in recent months, and it highlights just how uncertain this group of officials have become. They aren't up to the standard of the game they are overseeing.

3. Air Haaland

Haaland's second goal came from a soaring header
Haaland's second goal came from a soaring header

Right, to the actual football then, mercifully. Haaland is pretty good at that.

League Two players might be able to score penalties, but just over a month on from Roy Keane's rather off-colour jibe here was the big Norwegian doing what the big Norwegian does best for goals No.2 and No.4.

Well, we say does best. Haaland doesn't actually score as many headers as he should do for a man of his gargantuan size, but the way he leapt for this one was as athletic as it was mesmeric. He's secured another Premier League Golden Boot here and the bigger prize looks sure to follow.

4. Finish line in sight for tired Wolves

Gary O'Neil watched events at the Etihad from the stands

Gary O'Neil was forced to watch this from the Etihad Stadium stands as he served a touchline ban, but at the start of the season you couldn't move for people who thought he'd have been watching it down the pub.

Wolves were being tipped by many to go down before a ball was kicked this, and O'Neil by just many to be the first manager sacked. Yes this, like much of the past few weeks, was messy as Wolves have tired, but that doesn't detract from the fact that this has been a good season safe in mid-table and a campaign to build upon.

O'Neil will be back in the dugout for a home game with a similarly content Crystal Palace next week before Wolves' annual May visit to a sad final day Anfield, and after all that he can reflect on a job well done. This feels like a big summer for the club and their ownership though.

5. Title race or title procession?

City are still just a point behind Arsenal
City are still just a point behind Arsenal

It feels like that bit in the film where just you know it's going to turn out alright for the main character in the end. City haven't been as good as Pep Guardiola's previous vintages this season, Arsenal have been largely excellent and Liverpool surprised many until they didn't, but the title is only going one way.

Fulham away, Tottenham away (haha) and West Ham at home are the fixtures Arsenal fans are pinning their hopes on as they pray for a favour from their London neighbours, but none of those sides will be good enough to get the better of this City team. Spurs probably won't want to anyway.

Securing a fourth successive title has been City's main aim this season, and that particular empty page in the history books will be theirs soon, claimed just like so many others have by the Manchester machine.
