Bruno Guimaraes has thanked Newcastle United fans for giving him a day he’ll never forget.

Ahead of kick-off against Sheffield United at St James’ Park, fan group Wor Flags paid tribute to Guimaraes and teammate Joelinton, who recently penned a new long-term contract on Tyneside.

The famous Gallowgate End turned into a Brazil flag, accompanied by a banner that read: “From Alianca and Rio to Newcastle Upon Tyne, a home away from home. Joelinton and Bruno, our Brazilian Geordies”.

While Joelinton - still sidelined with a thigh injury - watched on from the stands, Guimaraes was on the pitch and admitted he almost teared up at the gesture.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, after the game, Guimaraes tweeted: “I've never been so grateful! Thank you for everything, NUFC fans. What a day! I Will never forget it @worflags.”

And also speaking to the media, Guimaraes added: "I was speaking to Joe in the changing rooms and we wanted to cry. It was very special, really lovely.”

Guimaraes repaid the gesture by putting Newcastle 2-1 in front against the Blades. The home side trailed after five minutes before an Alexander Isak brace, a goal from Callum Wilson and an own goal by Ben Osborn recorded a 5-1 win.

Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: “Very pleased with the display because they’re showcasing their love for the players, and for me it’s always about the players.

“If we can build a connection between the supporters and the players and make them stronger, I think that is hugely important.

“Players need to enter the pitch feeling as good as they can to execute under high pressure. That’ll have made the connection between Bruno and the club even strong, I love the fact he is idolised by the supporters. Hopefully that continues.”

Guimaraes, whose £100million release is valid between May and June, has been linked with a host of European clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Arsenal.
