Manchester United loanee has ‘exemplary behaviour’, his manager wants talks on his future

In addition to resolving the futures of the numerous players at Manchester United, there are a host of players out on loan who need clarity.

While the number of Manchester United’s loanees is now into double figures, at the year there were only five deals sanctioned. One of those who has been out on loan all season long is Mason Greenwood.

Mason Greenwood’s loan to Spanish side Getafe was sanctioned on transfer deadline day with just an hour to spare. It had been uncertain whether the club would find anybody willing to take him on.

Greenwood was relieved to resume his career and has had a solid season in Spain, away from the spotlight, in a scenario which has suited both him and Manchester United.

Mason Greenwood future

Mason Greenwood had one his best games of the season at the weekend for Getafe, scoring his first brace for the club.

Greenwood, 22, also provided an assist in a man of the match performance to win 3-1 over Almeria, condemning the opponents to relegation.

He is now up to 10 goals and six assists in all competitions from 31 appearances.

Getafe manager Jose Bordalas is keen to see if Getafe have a chance to get Greenwood for the 2024/25 season too, but says no talks have yet taken place.

Bordalas says he wants Greenwood to focus on finishing the season strongly, and implies a decision rests on both the wishes of the player, and Manchester United.

He told AS: “We haven’t talked yet, he is in the same situation as those on loan, it is important to finish as well as possible. We have to finish with a good image and good feelings for them and the club.

“When everything is defined it will be time to get down to work to confront whether Mason will be able to stay another year or not, it will depend on his club and the decision he makes. Let’s see what the immediate future has in store for us.”

Chants against Mason Greenwood ongoing

Since Mason Greenwood’s first match for Getafe, there have been critical fan chants targeted against the Manchester United loanee, coming from opposition supporters.

Bordalas is pleased Greenwood has not reacted negatively to the taunts, and says he has the support of his Getafe colleagues.

He explained: “He is calm, he is happy, he is treated very well. The boy has had exemplary behaviour to this day, his teammates help him. I’m sure they affect him, you know my opinion, I’m against any insult, no matter who the player is, whether it’s a hundred or one. I can not say anything more.”

United In Focus were told earlier this month by transfer expert Graeme Bailey that Manchester United are seeking a fee up to £50 million for Greenwood, amid interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Greenwood’s contract expires in 2025 although United can extend this to 2026.
