Football fans were left furious at VAR again on Saturday lunchtime thanks to a lengthy check during West Ham and Liverpool's clash.

Liverpool took their faltering title challenge to East London - and they thought they had been awarded a penalty early in the first-half. However, referee Anthony Taylor blew his whistle to signal for an offside.

As the Reds would have been awarded a penalty, the offside decision then went to VAR - with Cody Gakpo looking offside at a glance. And football fans went mad on social media as the decision took two minutes.

"When you're using technology that takes 120 seconds to confirm this as offside, you really do have to question if it's worth it anymore," one fan fumed with an attachment of the call. While a second said: "Clear as day. Why did it take 2 minutes to decide it was offside?"

"Two minutes lost for an obvious offside. What a joke," a third posted. And another added: "A two minute VAR check for a Liverpool offside that Stevie Wonder could see from five miles away..."

The anti-VAR discourse has reached an all-time high in recent weeks - and Sweden became the first country to refuse to use VAR following a fan revolt against its introduction.

Fredrik Reinfeldt, the president of the Swedish FA, told Aftonbladet more than half of the top 32 teams opposed VAR. He said: “If I counted correctly, we have 18 elite clubs and two districts that have said they do not want to introduce VAR. We respect that.

“That’s why we didn’t bring forward any proposal about VAR to the previous board of representatives meeting and I don’t foresee it in the future either. I stand by respecting the democratic rules of the game.”
