Sunderland continue to be linked with a summer move for Reims boss Will Still.

Sunderland are linked with a number of managers ahead of the summer, though it’s Still’s name that seems to keep on coming up.

He was linked before Michael Beale came in for his 12-game tenure and then again as soon as he was sacked.

And just this week, reports have revealed that Sunderland remain interested in Still, who continues to drop hints about possibly leaving Ligue 1 side Reims in the summer.

There’s a lot of rumours and speculation online that Sunderland would need to pay a huge compensation fee for Still should they hire him this summer.

And reports out recently revealed that Sunderland or indeed any other club wanting Still would need to cough up little over £4million.

There’s confusion over the compensation fee and rumours on social media that the fee will drop this summer, though nothing other than that £4million fee is concrete.

£4million for a manager is a lot, especially for a Championship club, and a stringent one like Sunderland.

Although Sunderland aren’t afraid to spend money in the transfer market under Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, they don’t pay huge amounts in wages.

Sunderland run a tight ship but could be running into some money this summer if they sell Jack Clarke and one or two others.

But £4million for Still doesn’t compare to the highest compensation fee ever paid for a manager; £21million for Graham Potter.

It was thought that it was initially £15million, though Chelsea’s financials revealed it to be £21million.

And Julian Nagelsmann cost Bayern Munich almost exactly the same amount when they took him from Red Bull Leipzig in 2021.

The third-highest compensation fee for a manager was again Chelsea, this time Andre Villas-Boas, with the Londoners paying just under £13million to poach the then Porto boss.

After that, names like Brendon Rodgers cost Leicester City £9million, Ruben Amorim going to Sporting which cost the Portuguese giants little over £9million, and then Real Madrid taking Jose Mourinho from Inter Milan in a £6.9million deal.

Rodgers also features elsewhere in the top 10 with Liverpool previously paying £5million to Swansea City back in 2012, so Still to Sunderland wouldn’t rank inside the top 10.

Still to Sunderland would be another big managerial compensation fee, though it’s not the biggest-ever paid and not the biggest paid in English football before.

But for Sunderland, it’s still a huge investment, and one with plenty of potential pitfalls given Still’s lack of experience and lack of experience in England too.
