The former Orlando Pirates midfielder believes the experienced tactician will have to make wholesale changes at Amakhosi if he takes over.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Kaizer Chiefs are in the market for a new coach to take over from Molefi Ntseki who was fired just 13 games into the 2023/24 season. Since then, Cavin Johnson has been serving on an interim basis.
Celebrated South African tactician Pitso Mosimane has been heavily linked with the vacant coaching post at Amakhosi.
Ex-Bafana Bafana star Teko Modise believes the current Abha coach is the right man for the job at Naturena but insists Mosimane would make major changes at the club.
WHAT MODISE SAID
"Look, I’ve worked with coach Pitso my entire playing career, maybe most of it, and I know his work ethic and his ideology behind football," Modise told iDiski Times.
"When coach Pitso came to Sundowns, he became successful, and he had an opportunity to be able to change the whole squad.
"If he goes, if any coach goes to Kaizer Chiefs, if he’s able to do that, then maybe there’s a chance that he might be successful.
"But with Sundowns, it was unique. Not every team is able to do that."
AND WHAT IS MORE
The former midfielder further opined Amakhosi might just be experiencing a bad spell and expressed optimism they will bounce back.
"I would say because I’ve been in football for such a long time that there’s always a spell, teams do go through a slump," the 41-year-old continued.
"It’s just unfortunate that when you’re Kaizer Chiefs you’re such a big brand and a big name, so you’re always under scrutiny, and I strongly believe that they’ll be able to bounce back."
WHAT ELSE
On several occasions - last and this season, frustrated Kaizer Chiefs fans engaged in hooliganism acts protesting a run of poor results. Modise says it is not new and explains how that once a club starts winning again, that unpleasantness is quickly forgotten.
"I mean such things have also happened to Sundowns; there was a time at Sundowns when there were fans outside the gate chasing the coach. We were not winning anything, nobody remembers those things," he concluded.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Sundowns' assistant coach Manqoba Mngqithi is another coach who is rumoured to be a Chiefs' target, but his agent Mike Makaab said he is still waiting for a formal approach.
Mosimane might be available at the end of the season regardless of whether he helps Abha stay in the Saudi Pro League or not.
It is up to the Chiefs management to find a solution soonest in their bid to end their nine-season trophyless drought.
WHAT NEXT?
Currently, Chiefs are chasing a top-eight finish which will guarantee them MTN8 place in the 2024/25 campaign.
It will also be vital for the Glamour Boys to let the new coach sign his preferred players as opposed to signing them for the forthcoming tactician.
