Chelsea can make the perfect signing for their new system for just £25m this summer

Chelsea’s transfer strategy since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital has largely centred on signing young players with potential.

The purchase of 17-year-old Estevao Willian from Palmeiras this summer is a perfect example.

Of course, Chelsea‘s new policy has not stopped them from signing more experienced players completely.

In this transfer window, they have brought in Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, 25, and Tosin Adarabioyo, 26. With that in mind, there is also another player who the club should make an exception for, with his current employers reportedly open to selling him.

Chelsea may need to sign a new left-back

Enzo Maresca arrives at Chelsea with Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell being the two natural left-backs in the Blues’ squad.

However, it has been claimed that Manchester United are interested in Chilwell, so perhaps the 27-year-old could end up leaving Stamford Bridge this summer.

If that does happen, Maresca may want another left-back to come in.

In terms of options out there, Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo would be perfect.

Joao Cancelo is on the market

According to the Daily Briefing, City could sell Cancelo for no higher than €30m (£25m) this summer.

At that price, Chelsea should be all over the Portugal international.

Last season, Maresca used an inverted full-back in his system at Leicester City. It is a role that Cancelo is very familiar with after Pep Guardiola utilised him in it before his loan moves to Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Now 30 years of age, it is unlikely that Chelsea are going to target someone like Cancelo during this transfer window.

But again, given his price and the calibre of player we are talking about here, Chelsea should at least give it some thought.

Left-back is a position Renato Veiga can cover, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that Veiga will complete his Chelsea medical later. But if Maresca wants more than that, then Chelsea really should be looking at Cancelo.
