Newcastle United won 5-1 at St James’ Park for the second time this campaign after putting Sheffield United to the sword.

Not since the opening day win over Aston Villa had the Magpies recorded such scoreline as a Alexander Isak brace and goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson, plus an own goal by Ben Osborn, matched that feat.

Over two games against the Blades, United have netted 13 goals - a club record against any one opposition in a season. That is, of course, after Eddie Howe’s men hammered Chris Wilder’s side 8-0 at Bramall Lane in September.

Saturday’s result, unfortunately, Sheff United’s relegation back to the Championship, but Newcastle needed it in the race for European qualification. And there to witness the afternoon unfold was, as ever, co-owner Amanda Staveley.

Staveley watched on from directors’ box and taking to Instagram after the game, she said: “This Team 🖤🤍 An amazing performance this afternoon! I’m so proud, as always, to be part of this amazing Club. On to the next! #howaythelads”

Howe’s men sit seventh in the Premier League table, a position that will likely be enough for a return to Europe, ahead of the remaining four games. Next up is a trip to Burnley, whose 1-1 draw away to Manchester United saw the Magpies move one point behind the latter in sixth place.
