Lewis Hall now linked with shock move away from Newcastle United despite imminent £28m deal

Lewis Hall is finally finding his feet at Newcastle United, yet now he is suddenly being linked with a move away from St James’ Park.

It has been a tough debut season on Tyneside for Lewis Hall, who joined Newcastle United on loan from Chelsea last summer. The deal included an obligation to buy him for £28million if certain criteria was met, and that has now happened.

Hall will be Newcastle’s first signing of the summer, and that is a more exciting prospect than it was a few months ago.

Lewis Hall starting to play regularly for Newcastle United

The 19-year-old is finally getting an opportunity to express himself in black and white, with injury giving Eddie Howe no other choice but to turn to the teenager.

Previously, Howe was unwilling to put his trust in Hall. The fear was that he could not be relied upon defensively in the Premier League. That was understandable, given the Magpies’ defensive struggles and his inexperience.

But now Hall is playing regularly, and produced arguably his best display in the 4-1 win over Burnley on Saturday. The left-back was outstanding, and is now playing with real confidence.

And that confidence is now coinciding with him being linked with a move away from St James’ Park.

That is according to Give Me Sport, who have reported that Borussia Dortmund are interested in Lewis Hall.

They claim that the Champions League finalists are keeping an eye on the youngster, who is unlikely to be loaned out to another Premier League club next season.

Dortmund reportedly believe that could give them an opportunity, as they weigh up whether or not to make a move for a player who started against them earlier this season.

The report adds that Dortmund could become more interested in Hall if they are unable to sign Ian Maatsen permanently, who they currently have on loan from Chelsea.

He started against Borussia Dortmund back in November

During Dortmund’s journey to the Champions League final, they beat Newcastle United twice. Edin Terzic’s side beat the Magpies home and away in the group stage of the competition, and were without a doubt the best side who Newcastle played in Europe.

When Newcastle travelled to Germany, Howe surprised everyone with his team selection. He named Hall in his starting XI, handing him just his second ever Newcastle United start.

It was far from a night to remember for Hall, who received an early booking and was replaced at half time as Dortmund went on to win 2-0.

No way Newcastle should let Hall leave

Dortmund are obviously not basing their interest on Hall’s performance back in November, but it is interesting to see them linked with the young defender.

However, there is no reason why Newcastle United should let him leave. Hall is finally finding his feet with the Magpies, looking like a player who has £28million worth of potential.

It will be better for his development if he continues working closely with Howe, and there could be more opportunities to play next season if Newcastle are in the Europa League or the Europa Conference League.

The only way Newcastle should let Hall go to Dortmund is if they offer a crazy amount of money. But that seems unlikely, and a loan move to the Bundesliga giants should also be ignored.
