Manchester City are thought to be in the picture to sign Joshua Kimmich this summer – and a report has now claimed what the player is intending to do heading into the summer.

City are expected to sign reinforcements for the midfield this summer – and Bayern Munich star Kimmich is thought to be a player of interest to Pep Guardiola, who has worked with him before of course.

It was suggested last month that City were one of five clubs in the frame to sign Kimmich, who will only have one year remaining on his contract at Bayern this summer.

The others are thought to be Arsenal, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Bayern are still pushing for a contract renewal, but at the age of 29 and having been at the club since 2015, the time may be right for Kimmich to embark on a new chapter.

But where is his head currently at? A report in Spain has offered an update…

Reported Manchester City target Joshua Kimmich is actually ‘waiting’ for Barcelona

Kimmich will definitely be a player to watch this summer – especially if Bayern do not win the Champions League.

The German giants have already lost the league title to Bayer Leverkusen, and going trophyless could see Kimmich push for the exit.

City like Kimmich and there is certainly a need for another holding midfield as cover, competition and even a partner for Rodri.

But at the moment, City don’t seem to be the player’s preference – at least according to Spanish publication SPORT. They claim the player is heading into the summer with the intention to ‘wait’ for Barcelona, to see if they can put together a viable proposal.

The £322,000-a-week ace is said to be seduced by the idea of playing for Barcelona and under Xavi, who of course is a legendary former midfielder. There has recently been some talk about him staying in his role as manager, despite his announcement earlier in the season that he would be leaving.

City should be ready to pounce for Kimmich

Kimmich is certainly a player City should be keeping an eye on this summer.

There have been claims that City could go for Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes. But Kimmich would be a much cheaper option, and has the versatility to also play as a right-back.

It sounds like he’s keen to make a move to Barca at the moment, but we shall see if they can present a suitable offer for the player. Surely, he has to at least be slightly tempted to work under Pep, who previously called him ‘outstanding’.

Barca also want to land Joao Cancelo permanently from City, so they might have to make a significant outlay to land their targets.
