The real reason why Bernardo Silva's crucial penalty against Real Madrid was delayed has been revealed.

Holders Manchester City crashed out of the Champions League following their crushing penalty shootout defeat on Wednesday.

Real advanced to the semi-finals after beating the Blues 4-3 on penalties, setting up a showdown against Bayern Munich, who beat Arsenal.

The Spanish giants failed to convert their first penalty as Luka Modric fluffed his lines from the spot.

But he showed '1000 IQ' as Andriy Lunin saved Bernardo Silva's penalty that he struck down the middle.

Silva, however, had to wait over 30 seconds before stepping up as a Man City fan held onto the ball in the stands.

He stood over the spot and cut a frustrated figure as he waited for the ball to return to the field of the play.

Mateo Kovacic missed his side's subsequent penalty as fans spotted what Antonio Rudiger did moments before the Croatian stepped up.

Lucas Vasquez, Nacho and Rudiger then put their respective penalties away to dump Man City out of the competition.

Speaking after the game, Pep Guardiola refused to blame Silva for his woeful penalty as he praised his performance.

"He said he wanted to take one and he is a reliable player," he said.

"But what a game he had."

Despite losing to Carlo Ancelotti's team at the Etihad, Guardiola thanked his team.

"I have to say thank you to these players from deep in my heart because the way they played," he added.

"But football is about winning and we didn't do enough yet we were exceptional.

"Sometimes you can win on penalties and sometimes you cannot.

"But in the game we did not convert the chances that we had, even though we defended really.

"Everyone performed at a high level. We said we would have to be at our best to play Real Madrid and they were."

Man City's double treble hopes are now over as they resume their campaign on Saturday against Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final.
