Frank Lampard snubs managerial return after holding talks over 2026 World Cup role

Frank Lampard is biding his time as he looks for a way back into management, having left his role as Chelsea's interim manager under a cloud at the end of last season

Frank Lampard has reportedly rejected the chance to get back into management with Canada.

Lampard has been without a job since leaving Chelsea at the end of last season following a brief interim spell in charge. He won just one of his nine matches in charge of the Blues and was previously sacked by Everton in January 2023 amid the threat of relegation from the Premier League.

The 45-year-old has emerged as a candidate for the Canada job as the team searches for a manager before co-hosting the 2026 World Cup. Canada are currently being led by Mauro Biello, who has been in interim charge since September after John Herdman stepped down.

The Telegraph reports that Lampard held initial talks but has now decided to take himself out of the running because he believes the role ‘does not represent the right opportunity’ for him. He will instead bide his time and wait for a different job in the summer.

Despite approaching a year out of the game, Lampard has been enjoying following from the outside while focusing on his young family. "Yeah enjoying being with the family and looking to get back at some point," he told talkSPORT in early March. "Hopefully something comes up that feels the right thing for me. I'm keen to get working again but as I reiterate, I am enjoying the [family life].

"It’s an intense job so when you’re out of it, it’s nice to appreciate being around all my children. You love the job, you understand the rigours of it in the modern day. I’ve enjoyed all the clubs I’ve worked with. They’ve all been big challenges for different reasons. I enjoy working with players, improving players and the team, so let’s see what comes."

While he has been spending time with his family, Lampard hasn’t been completely away from the game. He was seen watching England train before their recent friendlies against Brazil and Belgium and was also spotted at Stamford Bridge to watch Chelsea play Fulham in January.

Lampard began his managerial career at Derby County and reached the Championship play-off final in his first season in 2018/19. His work with the Rams earned him a move to Chelsea in July 2019 but, after a fourth-place finish in the Premier League in 2019/20 and a visit to Wembley for the FA Cup final, he was sacked in January 2021 and replaced by Thomas Tuchel.

He was out of a job for a year before landing the Everton job in January 2022. Despite overseeing a significant spend in the transfer market, Lampard won just 12 of his 44 matches in charge of the Toffees and his brief return to Chelsea at the end of last season did little to improve his reputation.
