Bayern Munich player ratings vs Real Madrid: Manuel Neuer, what are you doing?! Goalkeeper goes from hero to zero as Harry Kane's Champions League dreams evaporate in dramatic fashion

The Bavarians were on the verge of reaching Wembley when their previously inspired goalkeeper made a shocking error that turned the tie

A heartbroken Bayern Munich were left counting the cost of yet another defensive error as Manuel Neuer dropped a crucial clanger in a dramatic 2-1 semi-final second-leg loss to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

It was all so cruel on Thomas Tuchel's team, and particularly Neuer, who had made a string of sensational saves before Alphonso Davies opened the scoring with a stunning right-footed shot into the top corner of the net to put the visitors 3-2 up on aggregate.

However, with just two minutes of normal time remaining, the veteran goalkeeper fumbled a weak effort from Vinicius Junior and Joselu stuck away the rebound. With Bayern still in a state of shock, Madrid's super-sub struck again in injury time, this time converting a cutback from Antonio Rudiger, to send his side to Wembley.

Below, GOAL rates all of the Bayern players involved in a devastating defeat in the Spanish capital...

Goalkeeper & Defence

Matthijs de Ligt Real Madrid Bayern Munich Champions League 2023-24

Manuel Neuer (7/10):

A stunning double-save from Vinicius and Rodrygo set the tone for a vintage display of shot-stopping from a goalkeeping great - until he gifted Madrid an equaliser in the dying minutes of normal time.

Joshua Kimmich (6/10):

Vinicius' pace caused him plenty of problems but he was typically excellent on the ball.

Matthijs De Ligt (8/10):

A most welcome return to the heart of the Bayern backline after Kim Min-jae's horror-show at the Allianz Arena and he played a key role in a fine rearguard action that sadly proved in vain.

Eric Dier (8/10):

Strong in the air and made several well-time interceptions. Bayern's other former Spur should be immensely proud of his performances during this remarkable run.

Noussair Mazraoui (6/10):

The Moroccan was doing so well, getting forward whenever he could to good effect, but was at fault for playing Rudiger onside for the winner.

Midfield

Aleksandar Pavlovic Real Madrid Bayern Munich Champions League 2023-24

Konrad Laimer (7/10):

Another incredibly industrious display from the Austrian, who broke up several dangerous Madrid attacks. Didn't deserve to end on the losing side.

Aleksandar Pavlovic (7/10):

Surprisingly selected ahead of Leon Goretzka and acquitted himself very well. His passing was particularly impressive against such world-class opposition in such a daunting arena.

Attack

Serge Gnabry Real Madrid Bayern Munich Champions League 2023-24

Leroy Sane (5/10):

Got himself into some good positions but his final ball or first touch too often let him down. Unsurprisingly replaced with 15 minutes to go.

Jamal Musiala (6/10):

Struggled to get into the game in the first half but, when he saw more of the ball after the restart, he threatened a couple of times and also created a good opening for Kane with his quick feet.

Serge Gnabry (4/10):

Wasted a glorious opportunity to leave Kane with a tap-in eight minutes in and was then forced off through injury midway through the first half.

Harry Kane (7/10):

Called Lunin into action with a wonderfully-executed volley from just outside the area and even though his passing was loose at times, he'd already fashioned one chance for Davies to run at Real before releasing him again for the opener with a sublime cross-field ball.

Subs & Manager

Thomas Tuchel Real Madrid Bayern Munich Champions League 2023-24

Alphonso Davies (8/10):

An earlier introduction than the Canadian would have expected because of Gnabry's first-half withdrawal and went close with a deflected effort just after the interval before breaking the deadlock in sensational fashion with his first Champions League goal. Rough that it counted for nothing in the end.

Kim Min-jae (N/A):

Introduced with 15 minutes to go to help Bayern see out the game - but they did not.

Thomas Muller (4/10):

Came on for Musiala but butchered a breakaway when Bayern were still 1-0 up.

Eric Choupo-Moting (N/A):

Thrown on late on but didn't have enough time to make an impact.

Thomas Tuchel (7/10):

It looked like he'd got everything right. Pavlovic was composure personified in midfield, while the bold decision to put Davies on in place of Gnabry paid off spectacularly. However, Neuer's error changed everything, and made Tuchel's decision to replace Sane with an extra defender (Kim) look ill-advised.
