League title race: Big blow for Mamelodi Sundowns as Stellenbosch thrash Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates' hopes dashed

The Buccaneers are out of the running for the league title, while the Brazilians still have a chance with two matches left.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Over the weekend, Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Kaizer Chiefs all took part in the Diski Challenge.

While Pirates and Sundowns achieved comparable outcomes, Chiefs suffered a defeat.

STELLENBOSCH 3-0 KAIZER CHIEFS

The Cape Winelands side solidified their position at the summit of the standings with a commanding 3-0 victory over Amakhosi. The scoring opened in the 14th minute when Thulani Mini found the net from close range.

Ten minutes into the second half, Mervin Boji doubled their lead with a well-placed strike, before Mini secured his brace in the 67th minute to seal an impressive win.

CAPE TOWN CITY 3-1 CAPE TOWN SPURS

Cape Town City and Cape Town Spurs DDC

Cape Town City claimed victory in the Cape Derby by defeating the Urban Warriors.

They swiftly gained a two-goal advantage in the first half, courtesy of an own goal from Jeander Gaffoor and a strike from Shakeel April. Cee-Jay Bezuidenhout then secured the derby win with a goal in the second half.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 3-0 ROYAL AM

Siyabonga Ndebele, Thando Buthelezi and Keabetswe Ramotsei found the back of the net, sustaining Sundowns' championship aspirations.

They now trail leaders Stellenbosch by three points with two league matches remaining.

ORLANDO PIRATES 4-2 RICHARDS BAY

Orlando Pirates and Richards Bay DDC

The Buccaneers secured consecutive league victories by overcoming the Natal Rich Boys. Simphiwe Masilela and Jabulani Mokone propelled Pirates to a two-goal lead, with Tebogo Masemola and Mehluleli Maphumulo adding goals in the second half. Wandile Ngema and Ashay Sewlall found the net for the visitors.

With Stellenbosch defeating Chiefs, Pirates are now officially eliminated from contention for the league title.

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates DDC

With Pirates and Chiefs no longer contending for the league title, Sundowns stand as the only remaining challenger among The Big Three against Stellenbosch.

Stellenbosch currently lead the standings with 63 points, while Sundowns trail closely behind with 60 points, both teams having completed 28 matches this season.
