Erik ten Hag reportedly summoned his inner Sir Alex Ferguson in the Manchester United dressing room by unleashing the hairdryer treatment after Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City. United were almost on the wrong end of one of the greatest-ever comebacks in English football at Wembley Stadium.

The Red Devils have reached a third final in 14 months, booking a rematch of last season's first-ever Manchester derby FA Cup final against Manchester City.

But Ten Hag's position came under intensified scrutiny after his side conceded three times in the final 24 minutes to throw away a 3-0 lead against the Championship outfit.

Coventry looked to have completed the comeback with a last-gasp extra-time strike before VAR rescued United with a fortunate offside decision.

United recovered from Casemiro's shocking failed panenka at the start of the penalty shootout, profiting from two Coventry misses to win 4-2 from the spot.

However, the latest in a series of collapses during Ten Hag's problematic second season in charge didn't do much to boost his hopes of remaining manager beyond the summer.

And the Dutchman reportedly made his dismay known to his squad once the relief of progression into the May 25 final wore off away from the cameras.

According to the Mail, Ten Hag tore into his frail players in the dressing room after full-time for allowing another game they had controlled for 70 minutes to explode into chaos.

The 54-year-old has regularly stated his desire for control as he searches to implement his vision on the pitch, but he has rarely received it from his players this season.

His tactical instructions have, therefore, been questioned. A gaping gap between United's midfield and defence has been a common sight, as have shots fired towards Andre Onana's goal.

These shortcomings have heavily contributed to underwhelming results, which in turn have left Ten Hag's future in considerable doubt. His angry, private reaction to the victory is an indication that his patience is running thin.

During his post-match media duties, Ten Hag cut a frustrated figure and admitted that United "got away with it" against Coventry.

"We can play on very high levels, but we can go to very low levels in the same game. That's not explainable," the United boss explained.

"I have to teach my players, clear. We have to do better on such occasions. On several occasions, we let each other down. Today we got away with it."

Two routine wins against the Premier League's bottom two clubs, Sheffield United and Burnley, at Old Trafford this week would relieve some pressure.

But the damage may have already been done as United's new-look sporting hierarchy accelerates preparations for next season.
