Liverpool Academy star has earned 'trusted player' status and it could affect transfer plan

Liverpool has a host of existing Academy talent to consider when making transfer plans. One name on the 'trusted player' list could be especially significant.

Liverpool will not forget about one Academy star as it draws up its transfer plans.

Jürgen Klopp has shown little interest in the identity of his successor. He confirmed almost as soon as he was leaving that he would have no input in selecting the next Liverpool boss.

That's surely a good thing for Liverpool, minimizing the chances of repeating the circus that ensued in the wake of Sir Alex Ferguson's departure from Manchester United. In a marked contrast, FSG have placed a real focus on putting together a world-class backroom team to manage the transition, rehiring Michael Edwards and appointing Richard Hughes as sporting director.

In a second return to the club, former loan pathways manager David Woodfine is set to join as Hughes' assistant. All of these appointments have been made ahead of sourcing Klopp's heir.

But Klopp has felt compelled to leave one message to his successor. He has implored whoever comes next to remember the Academy talent at the club before making transfer plans.

In truth, that message is directed as much towards Edwards and Hughes as anyone else, with the new manager unlikely to have as much say in transfer activity as Klopp currently enjoys. But it's certainly a pertinent point to make, with a host of young talent now in and around the first team.

It would be a shame if overzealous recruitment blocked the pathways for the likes of Jarell Quansah or Bobby Clark, for instance, both of whom have proved capable of contributing this season. Jayden Danns is likely a little way behind those two, but has nonetheless made a mark in the senior team.

One player who isn't immediately mentioned in the same breath is Stefan Bajčetić. To be honest, it's easy to forget about him, after injury effectively derailed his entire season.

But before Quansah, Clark and the rest, it was Bajčetić having a breakout season, even ousting Fabinho and being hailed by Mohamed Salah as the team's best player over a tricky period. And Neil Jones has told Caught Offside that the club continues to hold him in high regard, to the point where certain transfer moves may not be pursued.

“Wataru Endō aside, Liverpool have a real core of midfield players aged 25 and under," said Jones. "Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have settled in well during their first season, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott have developed into trusted first-team players.

“So too is Stefan Bajčetić, who has recently returned to action, and I believe he is an important player to think about when discussing Liverpool’s midfield plans. He is only 19, has already made an impression on the first team, and has the skills and versatility to play as a No.6 or a No.8, depending on the needs of the team.

“He is viewed internally at Liverpool as a big player for the future, and I expect him to have a significant role to play going forward, and therefore a significant impact on the club’s transfer plans in midfield.”

Bajčetić was the last under-18 player from Europe signed by Liverpool before post-Brexit rules came into force. Snapped up from Celta Vigo for a bargain fee, he initially joined the Academy setup before quickly being integrated at a more senior level.

Liverpool.com says: Dismiss Bajčetić at your peril. He looked talented beyond his years last season, and has returned to training having significantly bulked up. When he gets a chance, it's likely he won't look out of place at the top level.

Signing Endō as a medium-term solution could prove to be a masterclass for that reason. Another transfer in that role should not be dismissed out of hand, but if those at the club think Bajčetić is more or less ready, that's certainly something to think about.
