Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has said that he will learn from his mistake against Tottenham, which allowed the team back into the game in Sunday’s North London Derby.

After taking a 3-0 lead during the first time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Arsenal looked to be cruising towards three massive points in the second period. But in the 64th minute, Raya’s pass went straight to Cristian Romero who got one back for Spurs.

It got even more nervy with three minutes left to play when Declan Rice fouled Ben Davies inside of the penalty box with Son Heung-min converting from the spot. But Arsenal were able to withstand late Tottenham pressure to take the three points back to the Emirates Stadium and move four points clear of Man City.

That lead was again cut to one point just a couple of hours later thanks to City’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest. Goalkeepers for both teams could be crucial in the final weeks of the season, with mistakes potentially costly in the title race, but Raya has ensured fans that he will learn from his error vs Spurs.

“I’ve learned from making mistakes,” he told Sky Sports after the match. “If you don’t make mistakes, you don’t learn. It’s part of football, everybody makes mistakes.

“But the thing is, when the ‘keeper makes a mistake, is normally it is a goal and it’s more seen, more talked [about] compared to a striker missing a tap-in or whatever. But it’s just part of football and you learn from that, that’s the most important thing. You just learn from the mistakes.”

After the match, club legend Ian Wright gave his verdict on the two mistakes that led to the two Spurs goals. The former striker praised how the team dealt with it.

“I was really pleased with the way they were so in control of what they needed to do, especially once Tottenham got back into the game,” he told SuperSport.

“They’ve done so well to get to this point. You can’t do rash things which is what we saw the goalkeeper do, unfortunately.

“Even the penalty that we had given away was quite a rash decision to make from Declan [Rice], simply because of where the ball is. There’s going to be a player in and around it and you’ve got to be a lot more careful about that.”
