Gary Neville couldn’t quite believe something that Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon just told him in a recent interview.

Anthony Gordon has been going from strength to strength at Newcastle this season, flourishing under Eddie Howe’s management.

The winger is surely now a shoe-in for this summer’s England squad, and perhaps is even in contention to start.

Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka looks certain to start at right-wing, but the spot on the left is up for grabs, especially if Phil Foden is envisioned centrally.

But whether it’s from the start or off of the bench, Gordon will believe that he can make an impact for England in Germany.

That being said, the Newcastle man has just spoken at length with Gary Neville in an interview on The Overlap.

Gordon spoke to Neville about numerous subjects, but his admission about how he prepares for games really struck a chord with the pundit.

Gordon seriously impressed Neville with the extent of his preparation, and showed a new side to his game.

He said: “I’m fully switched on [two days before the game].

“I try not to think too much about the game but I do a lot of meditation, visualisation around goals, so if a chance comes I feel like I have already lived it then all I have to do then is trust my ability rather than overthink it.”

Neville replied: “Wow. Two days before you start visualising the game, is that your game or your opponent as well?”

Gordon: “That will be my opponent too. I usually know what he is going to do and what his habits will be.

“If I’m playing against a full-back who is running it’s more getting myself comfortable with actually, if he wants to go round me, I’m going to put myself in that position of being tired and getting back now so in the game it is a lot easier.”

Neville: “It makes sense but I’m trying to work out where this deep thought comes from. It’s unbelievable really. I’m amazed, in a good way.

“Everyone thinks footballers turn up, it’s quite instinctive, they are coached. I don’t think they ever think there is that level of deep thought or preparation going into it at this level.”

Anthony Gordon’s move from Everton now looks like the deal of the century

At the time, there were a lot of questions asked when Newcastle decided to spend £45m on Everton’s Anthony Gordon.

He was perceived as a strong talent, but a very raw one.

But just over a year or so on, and Gordon is now one of the club’s most important players, someone who delivers so consistently.

And Gordon’s admission to Neville in this interview perhaps explains why he’s been such a big success at Newcastle.

Not only does he have the physical attributes to succeed, but he’s also putting in a ton of effort off of the pitch.

All that being said, Gordon has said he’s inspired by one Liverpool player who is an ‘absolute machine’.
