Chris Sutton really can’t make his mind up about Bruno Guimaraes and Newcastle United

How do you solve a problem like Bruno Guimaraes? Chris Sutton certainly does not know.

The Newcastle United midfielder continues to be lauded by the Toon Army, and that was certainly the case at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Bruno Guimaraes was nearly reduced to tears as Wor Flags paid tribute to him and Joelinton, our Brazilian Geordies.

It was a wonderful display by Wor Flags, who once again got it spot on. They let Bruno know exactly how they feel about him, and he was clearly moved by their hard work and generosity.

He paid them back with a vital goal, putting Newcastle United in front against Sheffield United with a diving header. It was his fifth goal of the season, and a fresh reminder of why we simply can’t lose him this summer.

But there is a risk that could happen, with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Arsenal all interested in signing the 26-year-old.

And they know exactly how much he will cost too, with Bruno having a £100million release clause in his contract. However, it is only active from the end of May until towards the end of June.

There is a window of opportunity to snap Bruno up, and it leaves Newcastle in a strong position. They can lose him now and have the whole summer to reinvest the money, or they keep him and can dictate his fee until the transfer window closes.

It could be a win-win for Newcastle, but Chris Sutton is unsure what about should happen with the Brazil international.

He has been speaking about Bruno’s future on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, and admitted that he is not fully convinced about what the Magpies should do.

“I normally like to nail an opinion one way or the other,” he said.

“But on this one, I am sort of undecided because of his influence on that Newcastle team because if they want to get to the next level, this season whatever way you want to look at it, it’s been a disappointment. They are finishing the season pretty well.

“But how can they replace him, a player of his quality? If they get £100million, then how do you spend that? Do you bring two players in for £50million apiece? Is there a gem out there who Newcastle have spotted that the other clubs haven’t? That’s the game, but it’s highly unlikely.

“So, if Newcastle want to get to the next level, I think they probably have got to hold onto him.”

It is clear what Newcastle must do

While selling Bruno for £100million would allow them to heavily invest elsewhere, it would be so difficult to replace him.

He is such a unique player, while any player who the Magpies target to replace him will come at a premium as teams know how rich we are, while they will also know how much we need a new midfielder.

It could become an unenviable task, and one that Newcastle should avoid having to complete.

Bruno is a player who Newcastle absolutely must keep. He has the talent to take the club where it wants to go, and he is one of the players who Eddie Howe’s team should be built around.

Sutton is confused, but it is an easy decision for me. The only reason we should sell Bruno is if someone activates his release clause and we are powerless. If not, keep him at all costs.
