Jeff Stelling explains why £40m Arsenal target should snub Gunners and join Tottenham instead

Ivan Toney is poised to leave Brentford in the summer with Tottenham and Arsenal among those keen on the striker, who will command a hefty fee when he moves on

Jeff Stelling believes Ivan Toney should opt for Tottenham over the Gunners - claiming he doesn't see the Brentford man "as an Arsenal player".

The Bees striker has made a name for himself in the Premier League but, as his contract winds down, looks as if he may seek pastures new. Toney helped Brentford get promoted from the Championship, breaking goal records in the process, and has since proved himself as a top-flight striker.

Now a big money move away from west London is on the cards with several top clubs eyeing his signature. Arsenal have been linked with a £40million swoop as they seek a prolific No 9 but Stelling believes Toney could be the man for Tottenham, who are yet to fully replace Harry Kane.

He said on TalkSport: “My next thought is about Ivan Toney. We know, we know, I don’t need to be worried about being disrespectful because we know he is going to be on the move. We were talking about Spurs for Eberechi Eze, but Ivan Toney. No, I don’t see him as an Arsenal player, I don’t see him joining any of the top four as they are now.

He went on to add: Toney is pretty much the finished article, but I think the obvious choice for Ivan Toney is Tottenham. I think if they want somebody who is the nearest thing you can get to a Harry Kane, who can influence the game in all areas of the pitch, who scores goals as well, come deep, he can lead the line brilliantly.”

Toney has quickly picked up where he left off following a lengthy ban due to gambling. The Brentford man continues to be a threat as those exploits are putting him in the shop window with Brentford known to cash in on their top assets when the time suits.

Bees boss Thomas Frank has confessed that his main marksman, who has scored 35 times in his two full top-flight campaigns, is likely to leave this summer, but Brentford won't be selling him on the cheap.

"It is relatively obvious that Ivan Toney will probably be sold this summer," he told Danish media back in February. "We also know what he is worth. I don't think there are many strikers in the world who are better than him right now. He is a really skilled striker who is in his prime football age.

"Personally, as a coach, I would prefer to keep Toney but one day it could be fun to see him on a top team. This winter we actually had no offers for him, but it will surprise me if there aren't a lot of clubs that will be interested in him."
