Manchester United are likely to be busy in the summer transfer window as they seek to improve on this season’s efforts.

Although the Red Devils are in the FA Cup semi-finals, they struggled in the Champions League and aren’t likely to finish in the top four this year.

The Europa League or Conference League could still be on the cards though, and Manchester United will need to increase their strength in depth to fight on four fronts.

One area the Red Devils are in need of strengthening is defence, in wake of how many injuries they’ve had there this season.

Also, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans will be out of contract in the summer, while Victor Lindelof could well go up for sale.

Now, a report from Italy has suggested that Manchester United are frontrunners for “the best defender in Serie A today”.

The player in question is Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer, and Calciomercato have posted an update on him amid interest from the Red Devils.

Calciomercato say Manchester United are ‘certainly the most keen’ on the 27-year-old.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United and Atletico Madrid are said to be ‘lagging behind’, perhaps also in terms of player approval.

As for Juve’s stance, the report claims they are open to offers for any player, as they’ll need to sell if they want to bring in top replacements.

This includes Bremer, but they won’t be letting him leave for anything less than a ‘super offer’, with his valuation set at €60-70million (£52-60million).

Why would Gleison Bremer be a good option for Manchester United this summer?

Bremer would be a great option for Manchester United, as he is an outstanding player in his prime.

In 2022, he was the Serie A Defender of the Year, and last term, he made it into their Team of the Season.

Last year, scouting outlet Foot The Ball noted how Bremer’s numbers were ‘comparable to Virgil van Dijk and Ruben Dias’.

He’s an elite presser of the ball, is great at recovery, interceptions and aerial duels, and is threatening at the other end of the pitch too.

In addition, Juventus legend Sergio Brio sung Bremer’s praises earlier this year, as per Tuttosport via Il Bianconero.

“Juve’s strong point is definitely the defence,” he said. “They concede few goals and are showing great solidity.

“I really like Bremer. He’s an exceptional player with great timing and positioning on the pitch. The Brazilian is the best defender in Serie A today. I’m certain of it.”
