Inter Milan chief Javier Zanetti has confirmed the club plans to agree a new contract with Nicolo Barella amid links with Liverpool.

The Reds are set to embark on a new era when Jurgen Klopp leaves the club this summer. Arne Slot is expected to replace Klopp in the Anfield dugout at the end of the season, and already there have been rumours about potential new signings.

Barella is one player who is reported to be a potential target for Liverpool this summer. It's not the first time that the Italy international has been linked with a move to Anfield, with rumours first emerging in 2021 after the midfielder's impressive tournament at the European Championships.

Recent weeks have seen further rumours claiming that Liverpool could make a move for Barella this summer, with Manchester United also supposedly in the running. Barella recently helped Inter win the Serie A title, featuring 44 times in all competitions this season with two goals and six assists.

It is thought that Barella's current contract with Inter expires in 2026, leading to speculation around his future as he nears the final two years of his deal. However, Inter themselves do not seem too concerned about the reports linking the midfielder with a move away.

Zanetti, who is vice-president of Inter, has provided an update on Barella's future. The former midfielder has confirmed that the club plan to reach an agreement for Barella to put pen to paper on fresh terms to remain with the Nerazzurri, along with striker Lautaro Martinez.

"Lautaro [Martinez] and [Nicolo] Barella will certainly renew," said Zanetti in an interview with Radio Serie A, via TuttoMercatoWeb. "Both on our part and on their part, there is maximum predisposition to continue working together."

It remains to be seen what transfer business Liverpool will prioritise in the summer window. New sporting director Richard Hughes will be tasked with assisting Slot in building his first Reds squad this summer ahead of next season.
