Who is Bayern Munich vs Arsenal referee after Saka and Gabriel penalty controversy

Both Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel were unhappy with the referee last week following controversial penalty decisions

Arsenal's Champions League quarter-final second leg at Bayern Munich will be officiated by a different referee than the one who was in the middle at the Emirates Stadium last week.

Swedish official Glenn Nyberg was in the middle of two controversial moments during the 2-2 draw in North London last week. Firstly, the visiting manager Thomas Tuchel was unhappy after Gabriel Magalhaes inadvertently handled the ball before a goal kick, unaware that the game was live.

Nyberg apparently witnessed the error from the centre-back but told Tuchel he chose not to penalise it. Mikel Arteta was also angered by Nyberg in stoppage time as Bukayo Saka collided with Manuel Neuer in the area.

While it seemed a certain penalty, Nyberg chose to wave away appeals and VAR did not overrule the decision. After the match, Arteta explained the reasoning the referee gave for the penalty being denied.

"Nothing, I didn’t say anything, they said that they checked it and they decided it wasn’t a penalty," he told TNT Sports. Fortunately in the eyes of both managers, they will not be dealing with Nyberg tomorrow night.

Instead, UEFA has appointed Dutch referee Danny Makkelie for the fixture. So far this campaign, the 41-year-old has officiated five Champions League matches including Newcastle United's 2-1 group stage defeat to AC Milan at St James' Park.

In the competition, he has averaged four yellow cards per game and has not dished out any red cards. The former police officer primarily officiates in the Eredivisie but has been the man in the middle for two Saudi Pro League games this season.
