Arsenal have now missed out on a £50m payment from FIFA – which comes at a bad time amid the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules taking effect.
Everton and Nottingham Forest have already been slapped with points deductions after breaching financial rules, which state that no Premier League club can lose more than £105m across a period of three seasons.
Arsenal have spent heavily in that space of time, splashing £105m alone on Declan Rice, as well as a £60m chunk of cash to sign Kai Havertz, £40m on Jurrien Timber and £50m on Ben White.
Therefore, a £50m payment from FIFA would have been very welcome as Arsenal attempt to keep the books balanced, although there is now no chance of this money arriving at the Emirates Stadium…
Well, Arsenal crashing out of a UEFA competition – the Champions League – at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday will actually see them lose out on money from another giant of a footballing organisation in FIFA.
Defeat inside the Allianz Arena means Arsenal can no longer join Manchester City and Chelsea at the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
Only two clubs from each nation can take part in the newly formatted 32-team competition, although an exception was going to be made if Arsenal won the UEFA Champions League this season.
Each UEFA Champions League winner between 2021 and 2024 automatically qualify – hence Chelsea and Manchester City’s involvement.
Every side participating in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will receive a payment of £50m just for taking part – according to the Guardian – but Arsenal have now missed out on the chance to receive this cash, as well as UEFA prize money for reaching the last four of the Champions League.
Despite missing out on the £50m payment, Arsenal sound like they are in no danger of suffering a points deduction like Everton and Nottingham Forest.
A story from The Athletic in June 2023 states that the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules are unlikely to be a concern for Arsenal any time soon.
Therefore, Arteta and Edu should be able to spend money on improving the squad even more this summer, as they look to keep bridging the gap on Manchester City.
