Ally McCoist has criticised VAR after the penalty review during Liverpool's clash against West Ham.

The Reds were taking on the Hammers at the London Stadium in the Premier League. Liverpool went into the game on the back of a disappointing defeat to Everton in the Merseyside derby in midweek.

In the first half, Liverpool players appealed for a penalty after Cody Gakpo was on the receiving end of a mistimed tackle from Hammers goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. No penalty was eventually given on the field after Luis Diaz was judged to be offside in the build-up to the tackle.

Referee Anthony Taylor stopped the game so the offside could be checked by VAR. The check by video assistant Michael Salisbury took a couple of minutes to complete before the on-field decision of offside was confirmed.

During the check, home fans inside the London Stadium became increasingly frustrated by the length of time taken to confirm the decision. Those frustrations were echoed in the commentary gantry with McCoist and Darren Fletcher.

TNT Sports was broadcasting the game, and co-commentator McCoist expressed his irritation with the amount of time taken by VAR to check the offside.

"You can hear the fans' frustration," said McCoist on TNT Sports. "There is an understandable level of frustration."

Lead commentator Fletcher then echoed McCoist's comments by questioning how long it took for VAR to agree with the onfield decision.

"Do you need a line for that? That's quite wide in VAR terms," Fletcher said, while the lines were being drawn for the offside by VAR.

"What was said to Anthony Taylor is that we will draw the lines for context. We don't need context, we need to know whether it is offside or not. Two minutes that took."

McCoist then explained why the fans had every right to be irritated by the time that was taken by VAR to judge the offside call.

"It's not on. That's not on," said McCoist. "You can understand the delay to a certain degree, for example, last Sunday in the FA Cup semi-final, but that's pretty obvious and the fans are letting us know what they thought about it."
