Sheffield Wednesday are a talking point following their 3-1 win at Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.
Sheffield Wednesday took another step towards their great escape under Danny Rohl this season, after beating Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park over the weekend.
Rohl and his players would’ve watched on as every other team in the relegation picture played before them.
And that would’ve made for difficult viewing as the Owls knew the pressure was all on them, after the likes of Huddersfield Town and Plymouth Argyle both lost, and Birmingham City drew with Rotherham United.
But Wednesday got the job done, and in some fashion too, winning 3-1 in front of a packed out away end at Ewood Park.
For the first time under Rohl, Sheffield Wednesday are now out of the bottom three.
There’s two games left to play and Wednesday currently sit in 21st place of the Championship table on 47 points; one point ahead of Birmingham City in 22nd and three ahead of Huddersfield in 23rd.
Plymouth are only a point ahead of Wednesday in 20th, Blackburn a point ahead of Plymouth, and then QPR and Stoke both on 50 points.
So it’s still all to play for at the bottom of the Championship.
Sheffield Wednesday though certainly seem to have some momentum right now; they’re unbeaten in four and have lost just one of their last six.
One man on the scoresheet on Sunday was Josh Windass.
He lobbed the Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper from distance for what was only his fourth Championship goal of the season, in his 23rd appearance of the campaign as well.
Speaking to Barry Bannan on talkSPORT this morning, host Jeff Stelling had this to say:
“I mean, they have done brilliantly. I think it was three points from the first 12 games when Danny Rohl came in. It was his first management job on his own, you know. They have got Josh Windass back as well, I mean, after injury. Real key for them. He missed a few weeks.”
Windass is no stranger to cricism.
He’s certainly viewed as one of the senior players in the Wednesday team, and one of the players with more quality too.
He’s played for the likes of Rangers in the past and has also provided for Sheffield Wednesday in both League One and the Championship, but injury has really held him back this season.
That, and also playing in different roles; either on the flank or behind the striker.
But on Sunday, Windass took his goal well and set his team up for what proved to be a huge win on the road.
Windass is one of the many out of contract in the summer and whether he stays or not, he’ll be eager to prove his quality and also his fitness, as he’ll no doubt be hoping for a new deal somewhere.
Like Stelling says, it could be Windass that holds the key for Rohl in the final games of this season, as he did in the penultimate moment of last season for Sheffield Wednesday.
