If David Sullivan was smart, West Ham could make £11.5 million profit out of Ruben Amorim

So, the West Ham United fans’ hopes of David Sullivan appointing Ruben Amorim this summer are not dead in the water after all.

News emerged yesterday that Ruben Amorim was in the mix to become the new West Ham manager, with David Sullivan eyeing up the Portuguese coach as well as Julen Lopetregui.

David Moyes will clearly be sent packing this summer, despite the Scot having dropped hints to the contrary, and all that remains to seen is who will replace him.

Amorim first emerged as a target for the Hammers owners last week, when a report claimed that we had opened talks with the 39-year-old Sporting CP boss.

The Portuguese flew over from London to hold a meeting with the Hammers owners – one that went really badly by all accounts – and he returned to Sporting with his tail between his legs.

“It was a mistake. The timing was completely wrong“, as quoted by the likes of the The Daily Mail.

“I’m always asking my players to be respectful, and I wasn’t, even if I informed the club before (that I was flying to have talks with West Ham).”

“I’m so sorry and I apologise to fans, club and players.”

Despite that apology, I’m certain he’ll be gone at the end of the season. Let’s just hope that his next club is West Ham.

After all, he insinuated that his mistake was leaving his club for talks with another party during the season, not talking with West Ham.

And I truly believe that there is a really sensible reason why he could in fact be the new Hammers boss, in spite of the cost involved in appointing him…

If David Sullivan was smart, West Ham could make profit on Ruben Amorim

So, the Hammers owner is clearly closing in on a replacement for Moyes.

He has never liked paying compensation for managers, either to appoint them or to get rid of them.

Some may say that Lopetegui is the cheap option, but in the long-term that’s far from the case.

Here’s how Sullivan should play the long game and actually make a really healthy profit on Amorim, rather than think short-term by appointing Lopetegui.

The 57-year-old Spaniard is available on a free, sure, but if he fails and Sullivan has to sack him, the Hammers owner will have to pay him off with a big chunk of cash.

Meanwhile, Amorim would cost a hefty fee – £8.5 million if you believe Fabrizio Romano.

So, the Hammers owners should pay that without hesitation, and then whack a £20 million release clause into the 39-year-old’s deal with West Ham.

When a mega-rich big club like Chelsea, Newcastle or maybe even Manchester City inevitably come in for him in a year or two, David Sullivan will then make a very handsome profit on Ruben Amorim.

It seems so simple to me. In the long-term, Amorim will work out as a cheaper option to Lopetegui. Surely Sullivan can see this as well with his business savvy?
