Aston Villa are on course for one of the most exciting seasons in modern history with them firing on two fronts.

Unai Emery's side progressed to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League after defeating Lille on penalties. They will play Greek outfit Olympiacos next month for a place in the final, which will be held in Athens.

Should they win the Conference League then they would automatically go on to play in the UEFA Europa League but they might bypass the second tier competition. They sit fourth in the Premier League standings and should they hold on to that position then they would qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

The job that Emery has done so far at Villa Park has been tremendous and he's a genuine contender for the Manager of the Season. He has improved the standards sevenfold at the club and has assembled a team that is worth a considerable amount of money.

Several of Villa's players are attracting interest from the 'traditional' top six of the Premier League as well as European giants like Barcelona. Villa broke their transfer record in the summer to sign Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported £51.9 million.

The riches from the TV deals that clubs receive from the Premier League allows clubs to spend so lavishly but they do have to consider Financial Fair Play rules. Some clubs have made mistakes with their transfers and are paying the price.

Thanks to TransferMarkt, we can see which clubs are the most astute when it comes to signing players. Based on their squad market value, they have crunched the numbers to see how much it costs a game for each of the 20 Premier League teams including Villa, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United.
