Chelsea get brutal £35m transfer reminder as Pochettino awaits Arsenal and Man City boost

The latest Chelsea headlines and transfer news from Stamford Bridge with an added football.london perspective.

Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen helped Borussia Dortmund qualify for the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday evening

Mauricio Pochettino will undoubtedly cast an eye over the latest round of Champions League fixtures, with Chelsea interested in numerous outcomes. On Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund beat Atletico Madrid 5-4 on aggregate, with Paris Saint-Germain also advancing to the semi-final at the expense of Barcelona.

The Blues have been linked with the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Jules Kounde, Raphinha, Ferran Torres and Joao Felix, all of whom were in action. However, it was the display of Ian Maatsen, a player currently contracted to Chelsea, that would have caught the eye.

With 11 goals scored in the two quarter-final second legs, Wednesday's action will need to be immense to match that with Chelsea's next two opponents, Arsenal and Manchester City, both in action. The Gunners travel to Germany with their tie level against Bayern Munich, while Man City welcome Real Madrid to Etihad Stadium with that tie also at a stalemate.

While Chelsea are not in action for another three days, there are plenty of headlines surrounding the Blues as we enter the final weeks of the season. With that in mind, football.london has provided a fresh perspective on the big stories coming out of Stamford Bridge.

Clear Maatsen reminder

Ian Maatsen has been hugely important for Borussia Dortmund since his January loan move, and that was proven once again on Tuesday. The Netherlands international played the full 90 minutes and scored the goal that, at one point, put his side in front on aggregate.

Advancing from his left-back position, Maatsen received the ball at some speed before firing an effort across Jan Oblak and into the back of the net.

football.london says: "Considering the issues Chelsea have faced at left-back this season, having Maatsen at the club would have been extremely valuable. Nonetheless, at the time, the move appeared best for both parties, but that may no longer be the case.

"Given how he has performed, Maatsen's stock is only rising, and that may leave Chelsea with a significant dilemma. Upon signing a new contract, a £35million release clause was made active, and the Blues now face a monumental task to keep him in west London."

Man City and Arsenal worries as Chelsea watch on

Despite the dominant win against Everton, Chelsea will enter their next two fixtures as significant underdogs. That is because they must play Manchester City in an FA Cup semi-final and Arsenal in league action as they attempt to get their title charge back on track.

Even though Pochettino is yet to be beaten by either Pep Guardiola or Mikel Arteta this season, Chelsea will have to be at their best to avoid two consecutive defeats, but they could be handed a boost on Wednesday.

football.london says: "Arsenal and Man City both face high-pressure games this evening, and that could massively benefit Chelsea. Any injury problems being suffered now will likely be serious enough that recovering in just six days is not possible."

"There is certainly still a chance that Chelsea qualify for Europe, and getting something out of their next two fixtures will go a long way to making that hope a real possibility."
