Tottenham Hotspur chose not to sign a striker to replace Harry Kane last summer but the time may be right for a centre forward to come in this summer.

Kane left for Bayern Munich in August of last year, seeking to win trophies with a big move to Germany.

Bayern failed to win the Bundesliga though and Kane’s move hasn’t quite gone to plan, although he could still win the Champions League.

So what of Tottenham?

Spurs didn’t sign a centre forward last summer, instead choosing to land a versatile forward in Brennan Johnson.

January came and Tottenham did the same again; in came Timo Werner, a player who could play up front if needed but has mostly operated out wide.

Son Heung-min has operated up front but Tottenham could still stand to add a proper number nine this summer – and it’s not as if Postecoglou is averse to that.

Postecoglou used big and physical strikers at Celtic in Giorgos Giakoumakis and Oh Hyeon-gyu, so maybe it’s time for Tottenham to find that player.

Tottenham tempted by Ivan Toney

We are now seeing speculation surrounding a potential move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Transfer insider Dean Jones has reported that Spurs ‘could be tempted’ to make a move for Toney if Brentford reduce their asking price.

Jones has told Sports Lens that Toney will be allowed to leave for around £60million but Tottenham are so far unwilling to meet those demands.

The 28-year-old is expected to move on this summer but Arsenal have dropped their interest in signing him.

Manchester United are keen but it now looks like Chelsea or Tottenham will be the most likely landing spots for Toney this summer.

We can’t see Tottenham splashing £60million on Toney this summer, but if that price comes down to the £45million to £50million range, there may be more interest.

Toney could bring something different to Tottenham

There has been a real focus on signing young talents under Postecoglou with the likes of Micky van de Ven, Radu Dragusin, Lucas Bergvall, Alejo Veliz and the aforementioned Johnson all arriving.

Tottenham have shown that more experienced players are welcome too though with James Maddison and Werner arriving.

Toney wouldn’t be a signing with resale value in mind; it would be all about goals in the here and now, accepting that Spurs wouldn’t get their money back upon letting him leave.

Maybe that is what Tottenham need in the final third though; a natural goalscorer, a player who is an absolute nuisance for defenders with his aerial ability, physicality and athleticism.

Toney is superb with the ball at his feet too, as seen with an exceptional assist against Manchester United in March.

Gary Neville praised Toney as a ‘brilliant player’ earlier this season and we think he is one to keep an eye on for Tottenham.

Other strikers have been mentioned, but with Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez enduring a difficult 2024, a proven Premier League striker like Toney may become increasingly appealing.
