Tottenham Hotspur suffered a huge blow to their top-four hopes at the weekend.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side looked like the favourites to pip Aston Villa to fourth at the end of the season, but a crazy weekend in the Premier League has changed things.

Tottenham suffered a terrible 4-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United on Saturday. To make things worse, Aston Villa picked up a win over Arsenal that has now pushed them three points clear of Spurs, albeit they’ve played an extra game.

It wasn’t an ideal weekend for Tottenham, and one Spurs player came under a ton of criticism following their defeat at Newcastle on Saturday.

Tottenham star could be dropped once Richarlison returns

Like many other clubs, Tottenham have had plenty of injury issues this season.

James Maddison and Micky van de Ven spent time on the sidelines, while Spurs fans have barely seen Manor Solomon since his move to the club in the summer.

Another player who has had his struggles is Richarlison, who has been limited to less than 1400 minutes of football due to injuries.

The Brazilian underwent a groin surgery earlier in the season and has since had two different spells on the sidelines due to a knee injury.

Richarlison last started a game in the Premier League back in the middle of February.

Ange Postecoglou has deployed Timo Werner on the left wing since, and despite a few flashes of quality thanks to his pace and movement, the German has been a really frustrating player to watch.

Werner had two glorious chances to score against Newcastle on Saturday, which would’ve changed the game, but he missed both and that is becoming a common theme with his performances.

Jay Bothroyd, who branded Werner’s technical ability as ‘one of the worst players in the Premier League‘, has now claimed that the German will be dropped as soon as Richarlison returns to the side.

He said on The Optus Sport Football Podcast: “I feel like, if Richarlison is back, Son will go to the left, he (Werner) will be out of the team.

“And I think they will be better going forward because then you’ve got some players that you can play link-up play with, that you can work with.”

What Daniel Levy thinks of Timo Werner’s future at Tottenham

Tottenham signed Timo Werner on a six-month loan deal from RB Leipzig in the January transfer window.

The German was viewed by many as a perfect fit for Ange Postecoglou’s attacking system, but his previous spell at Chelsea became a concern to some.

Werner has shown signs of ‘outstanding‘ quality at times, but just as he did at Chelsea, he has struggled with his finishing at Tottenham, and that could impact his future.

Spurs have an option to sign Werner on a permanent deal this summer, and reports have claimed that Daniel Levy and the Spurs hierarchy view him as a ‘low-risk signing’.

However, if Werner continues to struggle in front of goal and loses his place in the side, it would be difficult to justify making his loan move permanent.
