Sergio Aguero's intense reaction to Manchester City's penalty shootout defeat to Real Madrid left fans in stitches with the Argentine put through the wringer while watching his old side in the Champions League.

The champions of Europe were dethroned at the Etihad as Real Madrid battled to a 1-1 draw before winning via spot-kicks - after Rodrygo's opener was cancelled out by Kevin De Bruyne in regular time.

But with the aggregate score level at 4-4 and no winner coming in extra time, the game went to penalties, which Madrid won after Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic both saw their efforts saved by Andriy Lunin - despite Luka Modric missing his kick early on.

During the clip, posted by ESPN, Aguero can be seen being put through an emotional mangle after watching his beloved City crash out as both Silva and Kovacic miss before Madrid converted all of their resulting penalties.

The ex-striker - who played for City 390 times between 2011 and 2021 and also featured for Madrid's bitter rivals Atletico for five seasons - had his head in his hands and looked on edge throughout.

The 35-year-old also covered his mouth and looked nervous before giving a fist pump when goalkeeper Ederson confidently slotted his effort home.

But when Antonio Rudiger dispatched his decisive kick to put Madrid through to the semi-finals and send City crashing out, Aguero reacted with rage as he took off his cap and thumped it against the table.

Fans watching the clip have reacted with delight, as one called it 'a masterpiece'.

Another, presumably a Real Madrid supporter, said it was 'officially my all-time favourite video.'

'Absolute gold content,' read a different post on social media, while one fan wrote: 'Best video I've ever seen.'

Aguero is a City club legend after scoring 260 times for the club and winning the Premier League five times. He also won the FA Cup once and the League Cup six times during his decade-long spell.

He sealed a move to Barcelona in the 2021-22 season but after just five matches he was hit with tragic news that he had a heart condition and was forced to retire from the game.

It came after he struggled with breathing difficulties during a LaLiga match and was later diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia.
