For the first time in his Newcastle United career, Lewis Hall played the entire game on Saturday against Burnley.
The 19-year-old was named in Eddie Howe‘s starting lineup for the fourth time in six games, as his Newcastle United career really begins to take off.
It was a slow start for Lewis Hall, who has struggled for minutes for most of the campaign. He arrived on loan from Chelsea, with Newcastle planning to sign him for £28million in the summer.
That deal is now definitely going to happen, but it is only in recent weeks that Hall has hinted towards actually being worth that much.
He could not get in the team at the start of the season, with Eddie Howe not convinced by his defensive ability.
But that appears to have changed, with Howe giving Hall the opportunities he needed. The Toon boss has admitted that Hall is suddenly playing with much more confidence, and that was evident at Turf Moor.
Newcastle were outstanding against Burnley, winning 4-1. It was a rather relentless display by the Magpies, and there were impressive performances all over the pitch.
One of them came from Hall, who completed the full 90 minutes for the first time in his young Toon career.
He did well against the pacey Lorenz Assignon, while he also used the ball well himself. His cross-field pass into Callum Wilson that resulted in Newcastle’s second goal of the game was exceptional.
Hall is proving that he can really influence Newcastle attacks with his passing ability, while he also looks much more assured defensively.
To the naked eye, Hall played very well, and the numbers back up that feeling. Only Bruno Guimaraes touched the ball more than Hall, and only Bruno recorded more tackles in a Newcastle shirt than Hall.
It was an excellent performance from the teenager, who must be delighted with his contribution.
Statistic | # | NUFC rank |
Touches | 76 | 2nd |
Tackles | 4 | 2nd |
Accurate passes | 38 | 4th |
Accurate long balls | 5 | 2nd |

During the early stages of his Newcastle career, Hall looked shy and unconvincing. However, that no longer seems to be the case.
That is why Toon fans are delighted with Hall, and a lot of them are saying the same thing about the teenager on X after the win over Burnley.
One fan wrote: “Even as a 100% Eddie Howe man, I still can’t quite understand where Lewis Hall was earlier this season. I get he’s young and systems need to be learnt and drilled as a defender but he was almost shunned at times. He was superb today and we have a real player on our hands.”
“Sign me up to the Lewis Hall fan club after that today. I’m all in,” another tweeted.
A third Toon supporter posted: “Lewis Hall has surely secured his place now? He’s ridiculously good technically!”
This Newcastle fan added: “Lewis Hall was unbelievable today! Looks like he is settling and getting so much better defensively which is great to see!”
“Wait… has Lewis Hall been Anthony Gordon’d? Almost as if Eddie knows what he’s doing,” a fifth member of the Toon Army wrote.
Finally, a sixth supporter tweeted: “Lewis Hall is a baller. I think We’ve done well there like.”
It appears that Lewis Hall has well and truly arrived as a Newcastle United player, having looked like a complete waste of money just a few months ago. Eddie Howe has worked his magic, and this is only just the beginning of what Hall is capable of.
He is further evidence that the future is very bright for Newcastle United.
