Borussia Dortmund are facing something of a win-win situation in the Champions League final, with the German giants set for a big payday even if they are beaten by Real Madrid.

Edin Terzic’s side progressed to next month’s showpiece at Wembley courtesy of a 2-0 aggregate win over Paris Saint-Germain, with Mats Hummels heading Dortmund ahead on the night as PSG hit the woodwork four times.

A day later, Real Madrid booked their place in the final thanks to an even more dramatic 4-3 victory over Bayern Munich – who for a long time looked as though they would progress.

The Bavarians were leading up until the 88th minute before substitute Joselu netted twice in the space of three minutes to send Bayern crashing out – though the match was not without controversy.

Real and Dortmund will now meet at Wembley on June 1, with the match seeing Jude Bellingham come up against his old club for the first time.

As a result of his transfer last summer, German newspaper Rhur Nachrichten are reporting that Dortmund are set to land a sizeable windfall irrespective of whether they win or lose.

Bellingham’s transfer included around €32million (£27.5m) worth of add-ons and bonuses, most of which are relatively easy to trigger.

On top of Real Madrid needing to pay additional bonuses for winning the Spanish league title and qualifying for the Champions League next season, the deal also included an add-on should they win it.

As such, if Bellingham is on the winning team at Wembley, Dortmund will actually receive a further €5million (£4.3m) from Real.

In addition to that, if the England international makes the Champions League Team of the Season – which seems highly likely after a superb campaign – Bild are reporting that BVB will be due another €2million (£1.7m).

With the runners-up in the Champions League taking home €15.5m (£12.9m), the bonuses for Bellingham would actually take Dortmund’s payday to €22.5m (£19.3m) – which is more than the €20m (£17.2m) given to the winners of the competition.

Speaking about taking on his old club at the home of English football, Bellingham told TNT Sports: ‘At Wembley, against Dortmund, it’s a weird one. I can’t believe it. I’m so looking forward to it, the atmosphere, the game itself.’

Asked if he would have preferred to face a different club, he replied: ‘I think at this point of the competition, anyone who’s still in it or anyone that’s got to the final deserves to be there.

‘So to cherry pick would be unfair. We’ve got here because we deserve to, they’ve got there because they deserve to, and that’s what the final is all about and hopefully it will be a great game.’
