Newcastle United are interested in signing a very talented midfielder, but that has got nothing to do with Bruno Guimaraes’ future.

The 26-year-old continues to be heavily linked with a move away from St James’ Park, despite Newcastle United being very clear about their desire to keep hold of their best players.

But Newcastle are slightly vulnerable when it comes to Bruno Guimaraes. That is because he has a £100million release clause in his contract, which can be activated from the end of this month until the final week of June.

The likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain will have a window of opportunity to sign him. And if they do sign him, it will massively alter Newcastle’s own transfer plans. They will need to bring in a replacement, but will have great capacity to splash the cash.

Newcastle interested in Nottingham Forest star

However, one player who Newcastle are interested in has nothing to do with whether or not Bruno stays or goes.

Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White emerged as a target for Newcastle in January, and he is set to be on the Magpies’ radar again. And Eddie Howe could be in luck, with Forest possibly needing to cash in on one of their assets due to PSR.

There could be an opportunity for the Magpies to sign the £42.5million midfielder, and he is certainly a player who would fit in at St James’ Park. The 24-year-old is incredibly versatile, while he has also been described as a leader.

Those qualities are probably why, according to the Athletic, Newcastle are interested in signing Gibbs-White this summer, regardless of whether Bruno stays or goes.

Morgan Gibbs-White can compliment Bruno Guimaraes at Newcastle

Gibbs-White is a player who could thrive alongside Bruno at Newcastle. But he is not someone who should arrive to replace Bruno. They have different qualities, and it would be incredibly exciting to see them both in black and white.

MGW is much more attacking, and can play out wide or as an attacking midfielder. That has to be why he is appealing to Eddie Howe, who will know that he needs another top level talent that can influence games in the final third.

But Gibbs-White can also operate in a deeper role. He played as part of a midfield two against Manchester City last month, and did very well. He showcased the ball-winning ability that Howe will appreciate, and it will be interesting to see whether Newcastle are capable of doing a deal with Forest in the coming months.

Whether he arrives at St James’ Park or not, it will have nothing to do with Bruno Guimaraes and his future.
