New England Revolution fans were last night spotted doing something unusual toward Lionel Messi during their game against Inter Miami.

The reigning Ballon d’Or holder was again named in the starting XI for the Herons as Messi put on another performance for the ages, with the Argentine scoring a brace and assisting twice in a 4-1 win for Inter Miami.

Breaking another record in the process, Messi’s display against New England was one of his best yet since joining Inter Miami, with the Florida franchise now sitting top of the MLS Supporters’ Shield standings after 11 games.

And New England fans were seemingly in awe with what they saw from Messi.

New England supporters seen bowing after Messi goal for Inter Miami

As per the Miami Herald, some New England fans were seen bowing toward Messi after scoring against the Revolution, with Gillette Stadium sold-out to watch the Inter Miami superstar in action on Saturday.

With the report noting that the stadium erupted anytime Messi scored or did something with the ball, it’s pretty clear that the Argentine international was again the main attraction on the night for New England supporters.

Indeed, Messi having more fans in an away game than the home team is not a rare phenomenon, with the 36-year-old attacker one of the biggest pulls in all of sport and a marketing holy grail for MLS and its franchises.

And Saturday night showed that rivals fans are willing to support Messi if the Argentine delivers, something the veteran attacker is now seemingly doing on a weekly basis with Inter Miami.

Messi should not be surprised to see rival fans applaud him

As the greatest of the time and one of the most famous athletes on the planet, it’s perhaps no real surprise that Messi is receiving love from rival MLS fans whenever Inter Miami are in town for a fixture.

The majority of supporters have never seen a truly world-class talent like Messi, let alone a name as big as the Argentine international’s except from other American sports such as basketball or gridiron football.

And for Messi, he will not be surprised to see rival fans cheering him on in MLS games this season, with the 36-year-old a huge draw for everyone, especially when on the road with Inter Miami.
