Emma Hayes draws comparisons with Jurgen Klopp after end-of-season collapses

Both Chelsea boss Emma Hayes and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp have watched quadruple dreams ruined after announcing the end of their respective tenures earlier in the season

Emma Hayes and Jurgen Klopp's departure announcements from Chelsea and Liverpool have been "unsettling" and potentially impacted both team's 'end-of-season collapses', according to Karen Carney.

Hayes and Klopp called an end on their long-term tenures at their respective clubs earlier in the season with both managers still in the mix for historic quadruples. However, Klopp's Liverpool are in line to finish the season with only the Carabao Cup in tow, while Hayes all but confirmed that any silverware hopes were spoiled following their dramatic 4-3 loss to Liverpool in the Women's Super League on Tuesday night.

Hayes will leave west London after 12 years to take over as the new USWNT head coach and spend more time with her son, while Klopp has called an end to his near nine-year tenure out of exhaustion.

And while their announcements, arriving earlier in the season, ignited frenzied speculation about glittering farewell tours for both, the duo have seen their seasons implode in spectacular style in the last few weeks.

Chelsea Women were dumped out of the FA Cup and Champions League in the semi-finals, lost the Continental Cup final to Arsenal in extra-time and now look to have spoiled the opportunity for a record five successive league titles after Tuesday night's defeat to the Reds.

While Liverpool claimed the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 win over Chelsea, they were dumped out of the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and Europa League, and a torrid run of form in the last week leaves them off the pace for the Premier League title race.

"There's something in the psychology of Jurgen Klopp and Emma Hayes," Carney claimed after Tuesday night's WSL clash. "There are a lot of synergies, both announced they were leaving early, there is a subconscious in there that they are not going to be there. And it is unsettling.

"It's not ideal, you have to be happy and play football. All the noises do play issues. I do think her leaving early has been a factor for the team. For someone who has been, not flawless, but everyone has gone to her on every single topic, you can't have a perfect ending sometimes. I don't think you can ignore the elephant in the room. There are too many uncharacteristic things. It feels different, it doesn't feel right."

Earlier in the segment, Hayes declared "it's not going to be this year" in regards to the title, with Manchester City now sitting six points clear at the top of the table after Chelsea lost one of their two games in hand. The attitude was not in too stark contrast to that of Klopp, who has cut a jaded and passive figure after the draw with West Ham and defeat to Everton.

Yet, Hayes' defeatist attitude surprised Carney, who branded the comments "weird".

"You've got games left and Arsenal still have to play City, but you've told the whole world it's over, which is not like her usually. I find that quite weird. Even though I agree with her that I think it's City's. Of course they've had four competitions and injuries, I've always felt Chelsea could find a way. I didn't feel that today."

Asked if the title race is definitely over, Carney replied: "It isn't a given no and Arsenal have a lot to say about it. I just think City have been so good.

"They have been so consistent. Alex Greenwood and Lauren Hemp have been phenomenal. Collectively, there's the feeling again. Arsenal will make it difficult. But there's a defeatist side to Chelsea already. That just says: 'Here you go City' and they have to grab it now."

Chelsea face Bristol City, Tottenham and Manchester United in their final three games of the WSL season.
