Only three players have scored more Premier League goals than Newcastle United star Alexander Isak this season.

The 24-year-old has been on fire in his second season in English football, having joined Newcastle United for £63million in 2022 to become the club’s most expensive signing ever.

During an injury hit first year, Alexander Isak scored 10 goals. It was a decent start to what looked set to be a very promising Toon career.

Year two has been much more impressive, with the Sweden international finding the net 21 times in all competitions so far. With six games to go, he will hope to add to his tally.

Of those 21 goals, 17 of them have came in the Premier League. Isak is on fire in the league right now, boasting seven goals in his last six games.

He is unstoppable at the moment, continuing his rich vein of form with a scintillating brace against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Chelsea youngster is outscoring Alexander Isak in the Premier League

While Isak is flying, three players have scored more than him. One is Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, who has 19 Premier League goals. Another is Erling Haaland, the Manchester City superstar who is on 20.

The Norwegian is top of the pile right now, but has been joined by a player who is exceeding all expectations in what is his first season as a Chelsea player.

Cole Palmer also has 20 Premier League goals this season, scoring four during a 6-0 win for the Blues over Everton on Monday night.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were ruthless, with Palmer pulling the strings. Jamie Carragher described him as ‘fantastic‘, and he has proven to be a revelation since his £40million arrival at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle know firsthand how good he is, with the 21-year-old scoring and getting an assist against the Magpies last month as Chelsea beat Eddie Howe’s side 3-2.

And he is also a player who Howe tried to bring to St James’ Park just over two years ago.

Newcastle tried to sign Cole Palmer

Newcastle United were taken over in October 2021, and the new owners quickly appointed Howe as the club’s new manager.

After that, he needed backing in the transfer window. PIF invested a huge amount of money to give Howe a team capable of Premier League survival, and he achieved just that following the arrivals of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and more.

But one player who they tried and failed to sign was Cole Palmer.

At the time, he was on the fringes at Manchester City, struggling for senior minutes under Pep Guardiola. That is why, according to the Athletic, Newcastle made a loan approach to bring the attacking midfielder to St James’ Park.

It was rejected, with Man City opting to keep Palmer at the Etihad Stadium.

That did not hinder Newcastle’s survival aspirations, but it did mean they eventually missed out on signing a player who has proven himself to be a real star at Chelsea.

If Newcastle had loaned him and he had succeeded, the Magpies would have been well placed to sign Palmer permanently. Man City were proven to be willing sellers, which is why they let him depart 12 months later.

Now he is flying in a Chelsea shirt, and Newcastle are left to wonder what might have been.
