Pundit John Giles has said that one Manchester City player is close to being recognised as one of the best players in the world.

As things stand, the Blues are on the hunt to regain the three titles they won last season – the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Now though, one pundit has shared his thoughts on one particular figure in Pep Guardiola’s side that has played a big part in getting City to where they are now.

Giles says Man City star is close to being one of the best

Speaking in a recent episode of The Stand with Eamon Dunphy, Giles had this to say about Phil Foden and what he needs to do to become one of the best players in world football.

He said: “He’s on his way to greatness and it’s up to him now. He has to have the attitude now to be better than he was last week and the week before.

“That’s what I’ve seen with great players, never satisfied, have to be better. It’s a life thing, you have to have it, he’s one step away from it, in my opinion.

“So, he has to now push himself to say ‘I’ve done well but I’ve got to do even better week in, week out to become one of the greats.’

“He definitely has it in him, it’s just his own mental approach to it.”

Phil Foden has been on fire this season

With 45 appearances under his belt across all competitions this season, the Englishman has scored 22 goals and delivered 10 assists.

Across his 30 Premier League games, the 23-year-old has racked up 61 key passes, 120 shot-creating actions and 16 goal-creating actions, the second-highest total for each statistic in the City squad.

Foden’s overall performances in the league have earned the England international a season rating of 7.47/10 from WhoScored, making him the third-highest-rated player in the division.

Earlier this month, Guardiola said that the midfielder should be in the running to be named as the Player of the Season, which, in our view, could happen, especially if he can continue to score goals and deliver assists that help his side win more silverware.

In terms of Giles’ comments, if Foden has the mentality to become a regular first-team player for City after working his way through their youth ranks, we feel that he has what it takes to push himself and become one of the best players in the world, as he certainly has the talent to back it up.
