Liverpool transfer news as $65m 'inquiry' submitted and Manchester United in race for 'target'

Liverpool transfer news as a $65m defender is linked again. Meanwhile, a player who Arne Slot knows well would be 'open' to moving to Anfield with him this summer.

Liverpool might not want to think too hard about the end of the Jürgen Klopp era nearing, but with just two games left under the German, the hard goodbye is just around the corner.

Arne Slot, the Feyenoord coach, will be the man to take over. And while the 4-2 victory over Spurs this weekend showed that there is still plenty of promise within the existing ranks at Anfield and that a difficult few weeks are not enough to change that, there should still be some reinforcements brought in during the transfer window.

At the very least, Liverpool will need a center-back. And then there is probably a requirement for another midfielder and a forward. With a return to the Champions League now secured, plans can begin to be drawn up, even if Slot hasn't been announced just yet.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today, including two defenders. Both have been linked with switches to the Premier League (and Liverpool specifically) before, but there might be a fair bit of competition.

Lutsharel Geertruida (Feyenoord)

It is inevitable that plenty of Feyenoord players will be linked with Liverpool this summer thanks to the link with incoming head coach Arne Slot. But the Reds will not be buying anyone simply because of their existing relationship with the Dutchman.

According to GiveMeSport's Dean Jones, Lutsharel Geertruida is a player worth watching out for when it comes to Liverpool. The versatile player was spotted watching on at the London Stadium last weekend when the Reds drew 2-2 in the Premier League and De Telegraaf reported then that he would be open to moving to Anfield.

"People I’ve spoken to in the Netherlands say it would not be a surprise if he was pushing for a move like that because he is very ambitious," Jones wrote. "One of the good things about him as a defender is his versatility.

"And one of the promising things about him as a transfer target would be that he does not hold huge value in the market. He could probably be landed for around $31m (£25m/€29m), so let’s just say it’s one to keep an eye on."

Liverpool.com says: Geertruida does look like a good player but Liverpool signing a player from Feyenoord after taking the Dutch side's coach would feel like a big coincidence. One to watch, maybe, but certainly not a done deal.

Gonçalo Inácio (Sporting CP)

Liverpool and Manchester United have both made 'inquiries' for $65m (£51m/€60m)-rated Sporting CP center-back Gonçalo Inácio ahead of the summer, according to Football Transfers. The Reds have long been linked with a move for the 22-year-old.

With Joël Matip set to depart at the end of his contract this summer, it is logical that Liverpool would sign a defender. And a left-sided one would make sense considering that both Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah can play on the right.
