Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has been dislodged on loan at Real Madrid by Andriy Lunin, who was the hero in their Champions League clash with Manchester City
Chelsea loanee Kepa Arrizabalaga had a hand in Real Madrid's penalty shootout victory over Manchester City - despite not playing.
Kepa, 29, joined Real earlier this season as cover for first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury back in August. The Spaniard was immediately installed as Los Blancos' No.1 but a string of shaky performances gave previous third-choice goalkeeper Andriy Lunin the opportunity to shine, and he did just that on Wednesday.
Saving two of City's penalties after a 4-4 draw on aggregate, the Ukrainian was the hero for Real as they booked a semi-final clash with Bayern Munich. But Kepa, who was on the bench for the second leg against the Champions League holders, still played his part.
Davide Ancelotti, the son and assistant coach to Real manager Carlo, has revealed that the on-loan goalkeeper helped fine-tune the 14-time European champions' penalty taker line-up towards the end of extra-time. Also, in the minutes before spot-kicks were taken at the Etihad Stadium, Kepa was seen chatting to Lunin and gave him advice.
After all, the ex-Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper has faced City in a shootout before. Kepa infamously refused to be substituted before facing Pep Guardiola's side from the spot in the 2019 Carabao Cup final, saving from Leroy Sane but still ending up on the losing side.
Lunin got his moment in the spotlight on Wednesday, though, superbly stopping efforts from Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva. The latter's attempt went straight down the middle and bravely, 25-year-old Lunin stayed still and saved it.
"I needed to take a risk with one of the kicks, we picked one (to stay in the middle) and thank goodness it worked out in our favour," Lunin explained to Movistar Plus+. "It's an away Champions League game and we went through a lot of suffering... but I'm very grateful to the team for everything they've fought for. I can't imagine myself running like my team mates did today."
He added: "There are games that you have to suffer, that you have to overcome the challenges, that you can't always play with the ball and be the best team on the pitch. Tonight was like that.
"For me it has been a great experience. I'm exhausted, it's the first time in my career that I play a game like this, 120 minutes, penalties, the pressure and the responsibility. It's hard to explain the feeling."
